Women's Tennis Opens SLIAC Play With Shutout Win at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - Webster University women's tennis picked up a 9-0 shutout win here Friday afternoon over Westminster College in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both team at the Robert Elder Memorial Courts. 

With the shutout win, Webster, who has now posted three shutouts on the season, improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Westminster opens the season 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. 

The Gorloks won three of its nine matches on Friday by default as the Blue Jays only had four players available to play in the match as they won at No. 3 doubles, and No. 5 and No. 6 singles. 

Webster opened Friday's match by winning the other two matches as sophomore Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) won at the No. 1 spot, 8-1, to improve to 6-1 on the season. Brezovar and Federhofer have now won five consecutive matches.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) partnered together for the first time this season as they won 8-6 over Westminster's Erika Watanabe and Earthis Pascua. 

Sophomore Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) and freshman Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) won by default at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Following the doubles, the teams turned their focus to singles as the Gorloks would sweep all of the six singles matches, including dropping just seven points in the four singles matches that were played.

Federhofer picked up her first singles win of the season at the No. 3 spot as she earned a double bagel win over Maggie Sherman, 6-0, 6-0. With the win, Federhofer is now 20-21 in singles for her Webster career.

Higgins would pick up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pascua at the No. 4 spot and she is now 4-3 on the season in singles, while Brezovar improved to 3-4 in singles as she won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot against Watanabe. 

Webster's final singles win came at the No. 2 spot as Serbentas improved to 3-3 on the season with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Rebecca Zile. 

Ferguson and Armstrong won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively by default. 

The Gorloks will return to action on Saturday, April 3 as they host two matches at home as they open the day at the Webster Groves Tennis Center with a 9 a.m. match against St. Louis College of Health Sciences (formally known as St. Louis Pharmacy) and a 2 p.m. match against Westminster.
