Mark Moore's Goal in Double Overtime Sends Men's Soccer to SLIAC Tournament Final

Gorloks Making First Championship Game Appearance Since 2015

FENTON, Mo. - Freshman forward Mark Moore's (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) game winning golden goal just 2:34 into the second overtime lifted Webster University to a 1-0 shutout win over seventh-seeded Fontbonne University here Thursday night at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in the semifinal round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

"Fontbonne does such a good job at what they do, so well coached," Webster head coach Mike Siener said following his team's fourth win this season over the Griffins. "They are frustrating to play against, but our guys kept going, kept going and kept going and were able to get one there late. It was just a really good SLIAC soccer game."

With the victory, the top-seeded Gorloks extended its win streak to seven consecutive matches and improved its record to 11-1-1 overall and advance to Saturday's championship game against fourth-seeded Westminster (Mo.) College on Saturday April 24 at 7:30 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Fontbonne closes the 2020-21 season with a 6-9-0 record.

The Gorloks will making its first appearance in the SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament match since 2015 when they fell 2-1 at Westminster and are looking to win its first SLIAC Tournament title since 2012 when they defeated Westminster 2-0 in the finals at WWT Soccer Park. Webster is looking to win its fifth all-time tournament title, while Westminster will be looking to win its league-best sixth tournament title and first since 2017.

Moore's game winning shot came off a deflection of a ball shot by sophomore forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) in the 103rd minute of the match. Moore's goal was his sixth of the season and pushed him within one point of tying for the team lead in points with junior forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz,/Walden Grove). Murvin has recorded 20 points, while Moore now has 19 points on the season heading into Saturday's match with Westminster.

"Mark has a knack for the back of the net and it's helped us this year," the Webster coach said. "Credit to him for the season he's had. He works hard, is a smart kid and I'm happy for him and happy for our team."

Webster finished the match with a 22-12 advantage in shots, including a 3-2 edge in shots in the two overtime periods. The two teams combined for 20 shots after halftime, but neither team was able to score to force overtime. In the second half, Webster had 11 shots and put three shots on goal, while the Griffins, who lost four times during the 2020-21 season to the Gorloks, put three of their nine second half shots on goal.

Moore paced the Gorloks with five shots and pushed into the team lead in season shots with 39, while freshman midfielder Matthrew Cathro (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) added four shots. Gabriele and freshman midfielder Noah Abraham (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) each had three shots in the win.

The match was a physical contest as the two teams were called for a total of 36 fouls as Fontbonne had 20 fouls and drew three cards, including a red card from Drew Moser following Moore's game winning goal. Webster was called for 16 fouls. The teams had a total of 21 fouls in the second half.

Tanner Harris took four shots to lead Fontbonne and had two of FBU's three shots on goal, while Brandon Baumgartner added three hits in the loss.

Webster senior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) played all 102-plus minutes in goal and improved to 6-1-1 on the season as he had three saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season and Webster's ninth overall shutout of the year. Webster has now recorded three straight shutouts four shutouts in its last five matches.

With his shutout, Amick set a new school career mark for shutouts with 19.1 as he passed former SLIAC and Webster Hall of Famer Jeff Reis, who tallied 18.1 career shutouts from 1998-99.

Fontbonne goalkeeper Ethan Cowell was also strong in net for the Griffins as he picked up six saves and allowed only that game winning goal to Moore. Cowell fell to 4-8-0 on the season.

Webster also held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 6-0 advantage in the first half.

The Gorloks will return to action on Saturday, April 24 as they host Westminster College in the championship match of the SLIAC Tournament. Westminster earned its spot in the finals following its 1-0 double overtime win at No. 3 seeded Spalding University. Saturday's match will mark the second meeting between the two schools as the Gorloks picked up a 4-1 win in Fenton, Mo., on April 14.

"Our score last time wasn't an indication of how the game went. They play three in the back, push a lot of numbers forward, so we had to pack it in defensively, but Saturday should be a very different game than that one was," Siener said. "Westminster is not a team that parks the bus and packs it in, they are going to send numbers forward and it's going to be more of a track meet on Saturday. We'll see how it plays out with two teams going into double overtime and a third game in six days, we'll see who has the legs, if it turns into that type of game."
