ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles in four sets (25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21) to improve to 12-9 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding falls to 7-15 on the season and 6-6 in the SLIAC.
Prior to the start of the match, the team honored members of the Webster University faculty and staff as a thank you for their commitment to Webster and their students.
The Gorloks finished the match with 46 kills on 154 attacks for a .156 attacking percentage. They added 91 digs, six service aces, 12 blocks, and 40 assists. The Golden Eagles posted 53 kills on 192 attacks for a .099 attacking percentage.
Webster came out in the first set and jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back and cut the lead to one late in the game, but the Gorloks went on a 7-0 run to end the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set of the match, the Golden Eagles held a 16-13 lead midway through the game. Webster quickly tied the score at 17 and then ended the set on an 8-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping a close third set by a final score of 26-24, the Gorloks found themselves trailing 10-7 in the fourth. They answered with an 8-2 run and held a 15-12 advantage midway through the game. The Golden Eagles tied the score back up at 19, but Webster ended the game on a 6-2 run to solidify the match.
Kaylee Portell and
Madison Katz led the attack for Webster as they both finished with a team high nine kills. Katz also finished with 10 digs to go along with a match high 32 digs from
Cassie Gray, 12 digs from
Delaney Demman, and 11 digs from
Tyler Ramstack. Demman also finished with 12 assists in the match while
Emma Leppien added a team high 19 assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, October 22
nd when they host the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins and the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for the teams annual Dig Pink Tri-Match. The Gorloks will take on the Griffins at 10 a.m. and the Beavers at 2 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
