Gorloks Fall in SLIAC Semifinals

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Greenville, Illinois, to compete in the SLIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament Semifinals. The third seeded Gorloks were defeated by the second seeded Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in three sets (20-25, 18-25, 23-25) to end their season with a 15-12 overall record. With the win, the Griffins advanced to the SLIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament Final.

The Gorloks finished with 28 kills on 132 attacks for a .023 attacking percentage. They added seven service aces, four blocks, 25 assists, and 65 digs. The Griffins had 42 kills on 135 attacks for a .170 attacking percentage.

Webster came out in the first set of the match and found themselves trailing 10-7 early. The Gorloks battled back and cut the lead to one, but an 8-2 run from the Griffins put them up 20-13 late in the set. The Gorloks cut the lead back down to four but that was as close as they would get as Fontbonne picked up the final points of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Griffins carried over their momentum into the second set and jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Gorloks quickly tied the score at 13, but a 9-3 run from the Griffins put them up 22-16 late. Fontbonne ended the set on a 3-2 run and held a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The Gorloks tried their best to get back into the match in the third set and jumped out to a 10-5 advantage. Webster pushed their lead to 18-13, but an 8-0 run from Fontbonne put them up 21-18 late in the set. The Gorloks cut the lead down to one, but the Griffins picked up the final point of the set to solidify the match.

Tyler Ramstack led the way for the Gorloks as she finished tied for the team lead with six kills while adding 14 digs. Kaylee Portell and Madison Katz also finished with six kills each while Emma Leppien finished with a team high 10 assists. Leppien also added 13 digs while Cassie Gray recorded a team high 17 digs.

This marks the end of the 2022 volleyball season for the Gorloks. They ended the year with a 15-12 overall record and a 9-5 mark in conference play. They earned the third seed in the SLIAC Tournament and won their quarterfinal match over Blackburn (Ill.) College in four sets. They will return to the court next fall.
