Gorloks Split With Greenville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 5-3 and lost the second game by a final score of 3-1 to improve to 12-13 on the season and 8-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the split, Greenville moves to 13-17 on the year and 7-5 in SLIAC play.

In the first game of the day, Webster put together 11 hits in the contest. Greenville got on the board first as they scored two runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. The Gorloks responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at two. Webster took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Arianna Arias, but a solo homerun from the Panthers in the top of the sixth cut the Gorloks lead to 4-3. Webster scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Paige Thomas, and then picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (5-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in her third complete game of the season.

Taylor Jackson led the way at the plate as she finished with two RBI in the game. In addition, Arianna Arias went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Paige Thomas went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Katie Croxall, Ashlee Seltzer, and Sidney Holtz all finished with two hits.

Webster struggled to get anything going in the second game as they were held to just three hits in the contest. The Panthers got on the board in the top of the first and held a 1-0 advantage through the first three innings of the game. Webster tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun from Katie Croxall, but two runs over the next two innings for Greenville proved to be the difference in the game.

Sarah Shepard (5-7) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out nine in 5.0 innings. Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as she struck out three while not allowing a hit in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Katie Croxall led the way at the plate as she went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun. In addition, Sheyla Iniguez and Sidney Holtz both added hits in the contest.

The softball team is back on the diamond on Wednesday, April 20th when they host Fontbonne (Mo.) University for a single game. The game will take place at St. Joseph's Academy at 4 p.m.
