Gorloks Rally for 32 Runs in Sweep

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University softball team was back on the diamond this evening when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 16-3 (6 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 16-0 (5 inn.) to improve to 15-14 on the season and 10-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the sweep, Blackburn falls to 11-13 on the year and 4-8 in conference play.

Webster put together 16 hits in the first game of the day. They got on the board in the top of the first when they rallied for three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. The Beavers answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but two runs in the third and five runs in the fifth put Webster up 10-1 in the game. The Beavers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but a six-run rally from Webster in the top of the fifth solidified the win.

Sarah Shepard (6-7) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed one earned run while striking out three in 1.1 innings. Braidyn Burr and Reese Waggoner pitched in relief as the two combined to allow four hits and one earned run while striking out four in the final 4.2 innings of the game

Emma Bovaconti led the way for Webster as she went 2-for-4 with four RBI. In addition, Emma Steltzer went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Ashlee Seltzer went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Aven Ragwar-Hayes went 1-for-2 with two RBI, Alyssa Lyell went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Sidney Holtz went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Katie Croxall went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Sheyla Iniguez went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second game as they rallied for 18 hits in the contest. They jumped on the Beavers early as they scored two runs in the top of the first and four runs in the top of the second to take a 6-0 advantage. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and rallied for 10 runs in the final three innings to solidify the doubleheader sweep.

Reese Waggoner (6-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just three hits while striking out six in her fifth complete game of the season.

Sidney Holtz led the way in this one as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI. In addition, Katie Croxall went 4-for-5 with an RBI, Kaelyn Kearney went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Emma Steltzer went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Emma Bovaconti went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Paige Thomas went 1-for-4 with three RBI, Jaelin Holdaway went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Alyssa Lyell had an RBI, and Becka Brissette went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Gorloks return to the field on Tuesday, April 26th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Bluejays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second to follow.
