ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 10
th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down Big Bend to take on the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks came from behind to defeat the Bears by a final score of 10-8 to improve to 27-5 on the season. With the loss, the Bears fall to 11-22 on the year.
Websters bats were rolling in this one as they put together 16 hits in the contest. They got on the board first in the top of the first when
Evan Evola grounded out to the shortstop to score
Adam Lovell from third and give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Bears answered with a three-run rally in the bottom half of the inning, but two runs from the Gorloks in the top of the fourth tied the score at three. WashU answered with four runs over the next two innings and held a 7-3 lead through six innings of play. The Gorloks bounced back in the top of the third and rallied for three runs thanks to a solo homerun from
R.J. LaRocco and a two-run single from
Aron Hopp to cut the lead to 7-6. The Bears extended their lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh, but a four-run rally from Webster in the top of the ninth solidified the Gorloks 17
th straight win.
Bobby Strandt got the start in this one as he allowed one hit while striking out one in 0.1 inning.
Jordan Smevoll pitched in relief as he allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out three in 4.1 innings.
Ben Kowalski,
Cooper Hake, and
Alek Elges (7-2) pitched the final 4.1 innings as the three combined to allow two hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Nathaniel Martinez led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Aron Hopp also had a great day at the plate as he also went 2-for-2 with three RBI. In addition,
Adam Lovell went 1-for-5 with two RBI,
R.J. LaRocco went 3-for-5 with a solo homerun (3), and
Evan Evola went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Gorloks will return to the field on Friday, April 29
th when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
