ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the Player of the Week awards for the week ending on Sunday, May 1
st. For their efforts last week,
Reese Waggoner was named the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week,
Evan Evola was named the SLIAC Diamond Sports Baseball Hitter of the Week, and
Alek Elges was named the SLIAC Diamond Sports Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Waggoner, a sophomore out of Centennial, Colorado, pitched in three games for the Gorloks last week. She accumulated 9.2 innings while allowing 12 hits and just one earned run. She struck out eight batters on the week and was the winning pitcher in all three games she pitched. She is currently 9-3 on the season in the circle with a 3.14 earned run average, five complete games, one save, and 59 strikeouts. She is currently second in the conference in both earned run average and wins while ranking third in both strikeouts and saves. This is her first career SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week Award.
Evola, a freshman out of Ottawa, Illinois, was a spark plug for the Gorloks at the plate last week. In six games, Evola went 13-for-20 with one homerun and seven RBI while posting a .650 batting average. He had at least one hit in all six games and recorded multiple hits in five of them. Evola currently leads the team with a .443 average while also leading the team in hits (51), doubles (13), homeruns (6), RBI (39), and total bases (82). He is slugging .713 and has an on-base percentage of .529. His .443 average leads the SLIAC while his 39 RBI ranks fourth. This is his first career SLIAC Diamond Sports Hitter of the Week Award.
Elges, a sophomore out of Littleton, Colorado, threw the first perfect game in Webster baseball history on Saturday in a 5-0 win over Greenville (Ill.) University. This marked just the 24
th perfect game in Division III baseball history. He struck out seven in the game and made the play on the final out of the contest to solidify the win. In addition, Elges picked up the save in a 10-8 win over Washington (Mo.) University on Wednesday. He is currently 7-2 on the season with two saves and a 2.70 earned run average. He has allowed just 18 earned runs all season while striking out 50. He currently ranks third in the SLIAC in both earned run average and wins while ranking fourth in saves. This is his second career SLIAC Diamond Sports Pitcher of the Week Award.
