ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action tonight when they traveled down Big Bend to take on the 21
st ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were swept by the Bears in three straight sets (20-25, 5-25, 16-25) to fall to 2-1 on the season. With the win, the Bears improve to 9-0 on the season.
Webster finished the match with 17 kills on 74 attacks for a .041 attacking percentage. They added 14 assists, three service aces, six total blocks, and 40 digs. The Bears finished with 38 kills on 108 attacks.
The Gorloks came out in the first set of the match and found themselves trailing 8-4 early. They battled back and were able to cut the lead to 13-12, but another run from the Bears put them up four midway through the game. Webster once again battled back to tie the score at 19, but a 6-1 run to end the set gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the second set 25-5, Webster came out in the third set and jumped out to a quick 6-3 advantage. The Bears quickly tied the score at seven, and then used a 10-5 run to take a 17-12 lead in the game. Webster tried their best to get back into the set, but the Bears scored the final six points of the game to solidify the sweep.
Lauren Borik led the way for Webster as she finished the match with a team high five kills and a team high nine digs.
Ellie Biedenstein and
Delaney Demman both ended the match with six assists while Biedenstein added seven digs and Demman finished with eight. In addition,
Kaylee Portell and
Julia Frey each finished with four kills.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Friday, September 16
th when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to compete in the Loras Invitational at Loras (Iowa) College. Webster will play two matches on the day including a 5 p.m. start against Buena Vista (Iowa) University and a 7 p.m. start against St. Mary's (Minn.) University.
