ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.). The Gorloks were defeated in five sets (25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 15-24, 5-15) to fall to 5-3 on the season. With the loss, the Fightin' Engineers improve to 4-7 on the season.
The Gorloks finished with 41 kills on 166 attacks and posted a .120 attacking percentage. The ended the match with 92 digs, 38 assists, 10 service aces, and four blocks. Rose-Hulman finished the match with 59 kills and a .181 attacking percentage.
Webster came out in the first set of the match and jumped out to an 11-6 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed and pushed their lead to 20-12 late in the game. They ended the set on a 5-3 run and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the second set, the Gorloks picked it up to start the third and took an early 8-4 advantage. Rose-Hulman battled back and tied the score at nine, but a 5-2 run from Webster put them up 14-11 in the game. The Fightin' Engineers tied the score at 15, and the teams exchanged points over the next few rallies. With the score tied at 19, the Gorloks ended the game on a 6-2 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Webster struggled to get anything going in the fourth set and Rose-Hulman was able to take advantage to force a fifth game. They carried over their momentum into the fifth set and jumped out to an 11-3 lead before closing out Webster down the stretch to solidify the match.
Emma Leppien led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 18 assists to go along with 25 digs.
Kaylee Portell and
Tyler Ramstack led the attack for the Gorloks as they each finished with a team high nine kills.
Cassie Gray led the way defensively as she tallied a team high 28 digs. In addition,
Delaney Demman finished with 10 assists and
Madison Katz added 17 digs.
The volleyball team will return to the court on Saturday, September 24
th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to compete in the Blackburn (Ill.) College Tri-Match. Webster will take on Greenville (Ill.) University in their first SLIAC matchup of the season at noon and then take on Blackburn (Ill.) College at 2 p.m.
