LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action tonight when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles in four sets (25-23) to improve to 7-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding falls to 4-9 on the year and 3-2 in SLIAC play.
The Gorloks finished the match with 49 kills and a .118 attacking percentage. They added 97 digs, 41 assists, six service aces, and five total blocks. The Golden Eagles finished the match with 47 kills and a .091 attacking percentage.
After dropping the first set 25-22, the Gorloks came out in the second set and played a close game with the Golden Eagles. With the score tied at 15, Webster went on a 6-2 run and held a 21-17 lead late. The Golden Eagles battled back and tied the score at 23, but the Gorloks were able to win three of the next four rallies to tie the match at one.
Webster carried over their momentum into the third set and jumped out to an early 13-1 lead. The Golden Eagles cut the lead down to eight, but that was as close as they would as the Gorloks closed them out down the stretch to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was similar to the second as both teams exchanged points for most of the game. With the score tied at 23 late in the set, Webster picked up the final two points to solidify the four-set win.
Alyssa Jones led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high 12 kills. The Gorloks had three players record double-digit assists as
Ellie Biedenstein finished with 15,
Delaney Demman added 12, and
Emma Leppien posted 10. Biedenstein also added 10 digs to go along with a match high 28 digs from
Cassie Gray and 15 digs from both
Tyler Ramstack and
Madison Katz.
The Gorloks are back in action Saturday, October 1
st when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, to take on Principia (Ill.) College and Westminster (Mo.) College in a SLIAC tri-match. The Gorloks will play Principia at 10 a.m. and Westminster at 12 p.m. at Principia College.
