Gorloks Complete Five Set Comeback

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Scots in five sets (18-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 15-7) to improve to 12-10 on the season and 10-2 in conference play. With the loss, Lyon drops to 11-13 on the season and 6-4 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks finished with 55 kills on 242 attacks for a .103 attacking percentage. They added 123 digs, six service aces, 44 assists, and 12 blocks. The Scots recorded 53 kills on 225 attacks for .080 attacking percentage.

In the first set of the match, Webster came out and found themselves trailing 10-6 early in the set. The Scots continued to play well as the set progressed and went on a 13-6 run to take a 23-12 lead late in the frame. Webster would answer with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to six, but the Scots would score the final point of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

After dropping a close second set 26-24, Webster came out in third set and matched the Scots point-for-point. With the score tied at nine, the Gorloks went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-11 lead in the game. Lyon would cut the lead to four, but Webster would end the set on a 6-2 run to cut the Lyon lead to 2-1 in the match.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the fourth set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. The Scots quickly tied the score at 10 and would hold a 19-18 lead late in the frame. Webster tied the score at 19 and then scored the final five points of the set to force a decisive fifth game.

In the fifth set, Webster jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead. Lyon would battle back and tie the score at seven, but the Gorloks would score the final eight points of the set to solidify the comeback win.

Grace White led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high 11 kills. Delaney Demman and Ellie Biedenstein both recorded double-doubles as Demman recorded a team high 19 assists and 17 digs while Biedenstein finished with 17 assists and 20 digs. Biedenstein also recorded nine kills in the contest. Lauren Borik led the team defensively as she finished with a career high 34 digs. In addition, Olivia Powell recorded a team high seven blocks, Cassie Gray recorded 14 digs, and Megan Zablonski added 10 digs.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, October 21st when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to compete in a SLIAC tri-match at Blackburn (Ill.) College. They will take on Spalding (Ky.) University at 10 a.m. and Blackburn (Ill.) College at 2 p.m.
