GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action last night when they traveled to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for the SLIAC Men's Soccer Championship. The fourth seeded Gorloks fell to the third seeded Panthers by a final score of 1-0 to end their season with an 8-10-3 overall record.
The Gorloks were outshot 7-3 in the game and put two shots on target compared to three from the Panthers. Greenville also led in the corner count as they had nine while Webster had four.
In the first half of the game, the Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going as they recorded just one shot in the frame. Greenville forced
Luke Dillon to make one save in the 34
th minute but ultimately the game would remain scoreless at the break.
Greenville came out in the second half and were able to find the back of the net just two minutes into the period as they took a 1-0 lead with 43 minutes to play in the game. Webster picked it up after the goal and created a couple scoring chances in the period. They forced the Greenville keeper to make two saves in the half but the Panthers would hold them off down the stretch to solidify the win.
Luke Dillon (8-10-3) was the keeper for Webster in this one as he recorded two saves in the match.
After the game, the SLIAC announced the 2023 All-Tournament Team. For their efforts on the field,
Carlos Llamas and
Nick Thomas were both recognized.
This marks the end the season for the men's soccer team. They ended the year with an 8-10-3 overall record and a 4-3-2 mark in conference play. They earned the fourth seed in the SLIAC Tournament and made a run to the championship game. The team will return to the pitch next fall.
