Gorloks Drop Two in Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University softball team was back in action yesterday when they traveled to Edwardsville, Illinois, to compete in the Fontbonne Invitational. The Gorloks dropped both games on the day as they fell to the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) by a final score of 11-6 and then fell to Central (Iowa) College by a final score of 1-0 to fall to 0-6 on the season.

In their first game of the day, Webster put together 11 hits in the game. They got on the board first as they rallied for two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles answered with five runs in the bottom of the second, but three runs from the Gorloks in the top of the third would tie the score at five. The teams would exchange sacrifice flies in the fifth inning to tie the score at six, but a five-run rally from the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth would prove to be the difference in the game.

Kaley Adzick was the starting pitcher in the game as she allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Emma Steltzer (0-2) and Cheyenne Dickens pitched in relief as the two combined to allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Madi Sitchling led the way at the plate for Webster as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Kaley Adzick, Reese Waggoner, and Lucy St. John also recorded multi-hit games as Adzick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Waggoner went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and St. John went 2-for-2. In addition, Emma Bovaconti and Paige Thomas both recorded an RBI.

The Gorloks struggled to get anything going in the second game as they were held to just one hit in the contest. Central scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the second and held off the Gorloks in the final five innings to solidify the win.

Kaley Adzick pitched well in this one as she allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out one in her second complete game of the season.

Jaelin Holdaway recorded the only hit for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Saturday, March 11th when they travel to Tuscon, Arizona, to compete in the Tucson Invitational. The Gorloks will play two games on the day including a 1:30 p.m MST start against Rensselaer Polytechnic (N.Y.) and a 3:30 p.m. MST start against Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology.
