Swords Ties Record in Spring Break Finale

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they wrapped up their spring break trip with a matchup against Occidental (Calif.) College. The Gorloks defeated the Tigers by a final score of 14-6 to improve to 6-7 on the season. With the loss, Occidental falls to 4-14 on the year.

It was a milestone day for Ben Swords as he competed in his 213th career baseball game at Webster. He is now tied for the most career games played in NCAA Division III Baseball history. He is tied with Roger Thompson who competed for Marietta (Ohio) College from 1984 to 1987.

Webster put together a season high 18 hits in the contest. The Gorloks got on the board in the top of the first as Parker Wielt belted his second homerun of the season to give Webster a 1-0 lead. Mitch Daniels extended the lead in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly and the Gorloks held a 2-0 advantage early in the game. The Tigers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth, but a seven run rally in the top of the fifth gave Webster a 9-1 lead in the game. The Gorloks added four more runs over the next two innings, but a run in the bottom of the seventh and a run in the bottom of the eighth cut Websters lead to 13-6 heading into the ninth. Webster would score an insurance run in the top of the ninth and close out the Tigers in the bottom half of the inning to solidify the win.

Carter Hunt got the start in this one as he allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out two in 3.2 innings. Deven Shulstad (1-0), J.T. Miller, Adam Hill, and Mason Young pitched in relief as the four combined to allow 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven in the final 5.1 innings of the game.

Parker Wielt led the way for Webster at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with two homeruns (3), including a grand slam, three runs scored and five RBI. Evan Evola also finished with three hits in the game as he went 3-for-5 with a solo homerun (4), three RBI, and two runs scored. R.J. LaRocco (1) and Malik Wirges (1) also hit homeruns in the game as LaRocco went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Wirges went 1-for-3 with an RBI. In addition, Matt Staker went 2-for-6 with a run scored, Ben Swords went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Charlie Burton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Mitch Daniels went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The Gorloks return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 22nd when they travel to Bloomington, Illinois, to take on #18 North Central (Ill.) College. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
