O'FALLON, Mo. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action yesterday afternoon when they took on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles in the SLIAC Baseball Championship Round. The Gorloks dropped two games on the day as they fell in the first game by a final score of 8-1 before dropping the second game by a final score of 4-3. With the sweep, Spalding has earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the SLIAC.
In the first game of the day, both sides were unable to get anything going through the first two innings. The Golden Eagles broke the deadlock in the top of the third as they rallied for three runs to take a 3-0 lead. They added two more runs in the top of the eight to extend their lead to 5-0, but an RBI double from
Nathaniel Martinez in the bottom half of the inning put Webster down four heading into the final frame. Spalding was able to score three more runs in the top of the ninth and held off the Gorloks down the stretch to force an extra game in the tournament.
Jordan Smevoll (3-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out eight in 7.2 innings pitched.
Caleb Zbrozek and
Mason Young pitched in relief as the two combined to allow four hits and four earned runs while striking out one in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Webster was held to just seven hits in the contest.
Evan Evola led the way as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored. In addition,
Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-3 with an RBI while
Parker Wielt,
Ben Swords,
Mitch Daniels, and
Matt Staker each recorded a hit.
Spalding carried over their momentum into the second game of the day as they scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Webster would tie the score in the bottom half of the inning as
R.J. LaRocco hit a sacrifice fly to score
Evan Evola. An RBI double from Evola in the bottom of the fourth would give Webster their first lead of the day, but a run from the Golden Eagles in the top of the sixth tied the score at two. Spalding would go on to score two more runs in the top of the seventh and held a 4-2 lead late in the game.
Matt Staker would hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth, but the Golden Eagles were able to pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Alek Elges (7-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out five in 6.1 innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched in relief as he allowed two hits while striking out two in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Webster had a tough time getting anything going offensively as they were held to just six hits in the game.
Evan Evola once again led the way for Webster as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI. In addition,
Matt Staker went 1-for-2 with an RBI and
R.J. LaRocco recorded an RBI while
Parker Wielt,
Malik Wirges, and
Mitch Daniels each recorded a hit.
This marks the end of the scheduled games for the 2023 Webster University baseball season. They will find out if they have earned at at-large bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament when the field is announced on Monday, May 15
th on NCAA.com. The show is set to start at 11 a.m.
