Gorloks Stay Alive in Regionals

STEVEN'S POINT, Wis. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they continued play in the Stevens Point Regional at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Gorloks played two game on the day as they fell in the first game to the UW-Stevens Point Pointers by a final score of 20-1 before bouncing back to beat Augustana (Ill.) College by a final score of 9-8. With the split, the Gorloks advance to the championship series of the Stevens Point Regional.

In their first game of the day, the Pointers got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks answered back in the top of the fourth as Evan Evola blasted his 11th homerun of the season to cut the Pointers lead in half. Stevens Point went on to score 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth and seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to solidify their spot in the championship series.

Alek Elges (7-4) got the start in this one as he allowed two hits and two earned runs in 0.1 innings. Joel Arsenault pitched the next four innings for Webster as he allowed four hits and four earned runs while striking out four. Deven Shulstad, Caleb Zbrozek, Mason Young, Cade Gebhard, and Michael Ellis closed out the final 3.2 innings of the game as they combined to allow 11 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out one.

Webster was held to just six hits in the contest. Evan Evola led the way as he went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun. In addition, Dylan Coleman, R.J. LaRocco, Blake Mikes, and Matt Staker each recorded a hit.

The Gorloks got off to a slow start in the second game of the day as they found themselves trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Webster's offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth as they rallied for six runs, including two-run homeruns from Evan Evola (12) and Mitch Daniels (4), to take an 8-5 lead in the contest. The Vikings would cut the lead to 8-6 in the top of the seventh, but an RBI single from Evan Evola in the bottom half of the inning extended Webster's lead to 9-6 late in the game. Augustana would score two more runs in the top of the ninth, but the Gorloks were able to end the game on a double play to solidify the win.

Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed nine hits and five earned runs while striking out one in 3.1 innings. Alek Elges (8-4) pitched the next 4.2 innings for Webster as he allowed three hits and three earned runs while striking out one. Joel Arsenault recorded the save (3) as he allowed just one hit while striking out one in the final inning of the game.

Webster rallied for 12 hits in the contest. Evan Evola led the way as he went 2-for-5 with a two-run homerun and three RBI. In addition, Mitch Daniels went 1-for-2 with a two-run homerun, Ben Swords went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Matt Staker went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Gorloks will be back in action tomorrow, May 21st when they continue play in the Stevens Point Regional. Webster will take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 11 a.m. at Zimmerman Field in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. If they win, they will play the if necessary game following the conclusion of the first game.
