Gorloks Split in Regular Season Finale

ST. ANN, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to St. Ann, Missouri, to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for their final two games of the season. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 5-0 and then bounced back to win the second game by a final score of 7-4 improve to 19-18 on the year and 13-5 in the SLIAC. With the split, Fontbonne ends their regular season with a 22-16 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the conference.

Webster had a tough time getting anything going in the first game of the day as they were held to just four hits in the contest. The Griffins scored a run in the bottom of the third, three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one run in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (7-3) was the starting pitcher for Webster in this one as she allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out two in 4.0 innings. Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as she did not allow a hit while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Katie Croxall led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-3 in the game. In addition, Kaelyn Kearney and Madi Stichling each recorded a hit.

The Gorloks picked it up to start the second game as they rallied for five runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Griffins would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but an RBI double from Kaelyn Kearney and an RBI single from Madi Stichling in the top of the second extended Webster's lead to 7-2. The Griffins would score a run in the bottom of the fourth and a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Webster was able to hold them off down the stretch to record the split.

Kaley Adzick (7-8) was the starting pitcher for Webster as she allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six in 5.0 innings. Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as she allowed four hits in the final two innings of the contest.

Webster rallied for 13 hits in the contest. Katie Croxall led the way at the plate as she went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Madi Stichling and Paige Thomas both recorded multi-hit games as Stichling went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Thomas went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Lastly, Kaelyn Kearney went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cheyenne Dickens went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will be the three seed in SLIAC Softball Tournament and will host their quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, May 9th at St. Joseph's Academy. The time for the game has not yet been announced.
