ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the seventh ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were swept by the Bears in three straight sets (12-25, 21-25, 22-25) to drop to 2-5 on the season. With the win, the Bears improve to 7-1 on the year.
The Gorloks finished with 24 kills on 90 attacks for a .100 attacking percentage. They added three service aces, five blocks, 24 assists, and 46 digs. The Bears finished with 41 kills on 110 attacks for a .227 attacking percentage.
In the first set of the match, Webster came out and found themselves trailing 5-1 early. The Gorloks battled back and tied the score at six, but a 9-4 run from the Bears put them up 15-10 midway through the game. WashU would extend their lead to 20-11 late in the game and held off the Gorloks down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Gorloks picked it up to start the second set and matched the Bears point-for-point to start the game. With the score tied at 10, WashU went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead in the set. Webster would tie the score at 16, but a 9-5 run from the Bears to end the set gave them a 2-0 match advantage.
In the third set, Webster found themselves trailing 13-8 before calling a timeout. They battled back and cut the lead down to two late in the game, but the Bears would outscore the Gorloks 4-3 down the stretch to solidify the sweep.
Alyssa Jones led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high five kills to go along with a team high three blocks.
Ellie Biedenstein and
Delaney Demman ran the offense as Biedenstein recorded a team high 12 assists while Demman added 10.
Cassie Gray led the way defensively as she recorded a team high 12 digs.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, September 16
th when they host Greenville (Ill.) University and Blackburn (Ill.) College for a SLIAC tri-match. Webster will play Greenville at 10 a.m. and Blackburn at 2 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
