ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (Mo.) Eutectics for their first home match of the season. The Gorloks swept the Eutectics in three sets (25-18, 25-9, 25-21) to improve to 1-3 on the season. With the loss, UHSP drops to 0-10 on the year.
Webster finished the match with 35 kills on 116 attacks for a .155 attacking percentage. They added seven service aces, nine blocks, 31 assists, and 54 digs. They held the Eutectics to just 19 kills in the match and a -.065 attacking percentage.
In the first set of the match, both sides came out and exchanged points early. With the score tied at 10, Webster went on a 7-3 run and held a 17-13 lead late in the set. The Eutectics would cut the lead to two, but another run from Webster would give them a 25-18 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second set and jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before forcing the Eutectics to call a timeout. They continued to play well as the set progressed and pushed their lead to 14-2 before UHSP was forced to call a second timeout. The Gorloks did not take their foot off the gas and cruised to a 25-9 second set victory.
Webster once again jumped out to a quick lead in the third set as they held a 10-2 advantage early in the game. The Eutectics battled all the way back and tied the score at 19 late in the set, but a 6-2 run from the Gorloks to end the set solidified the sweep.
Alyssa Jones led the attack for Webster as she finished with a match high 10 kills.
Ellie Biedenstein and
Delaney Demman ran the offense as Beidenstein recorded a team high 14 assists while Demman added 12. Demman and Biedenstein also led the team defensively as they both recorded 12 digs.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, September 9
th when they host Anderson (Ind.) University and Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University for a tri-match. The Gorloks will take on Anderson at 10 a.m. and Hannibal-LaGrange at 2 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
