Gorloks Fall Twice At Westminster College Tri-Match

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team continued conference play by participating in the Westminster College Tri-Match on Saturday. The Gorloks battled in both matches but dropped the first set to Spalding in five sets and fell to the Blue Jays in the finale. WU's Eva Tarlos achieved a career-high seven assisted blocks in the defeat against Spalding.  

Match 1: Webster 2,  Spalding 3

Webster and Spalding opened the match with back-and-forth action that rallied the set to a tie at seven apiece. In that stretch of points, the Gorloks started the scoring on a kill by Megan Zablonski while Eva Tarlos, Grace White, and Alyssa Jones each added a kill.

However, Spalding responded with a 6-2 run as the kill by Tarlos generated the set-score of 9-13. Both teams continued the set with back-and-forth action as the Golden Eagles remained on top at 18-12. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to two at 17-19 with a 5-1 run. In the run, White and Zablonski each added a kill while Tarlos and Zablonski earned an assisted block as the run was capped off with a solo block by Tarlos. 

Two points later, the Gorloks closed out the set with an 8-1 run which started on a kill by Zablonski. Also in the run, Tarlos and Tyler Ramstack captured an assisted block while Ellie Biedenstein and Leah McGrath added a kill each as Tarlos added a service ace. The Gorloks took the first set by the final score of 25-22. 

Webster and Spalding opened the second set exchanging points as the Golden Eagles took the early 3-2 lead. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 12-2 run and took the 14-5 advantage. In the run, McGrath added three kills while Delaney Morio added two kills. In addition, Alyssa Jones, Ramstack and McGrath contributed a kill each while McGrath and Lauren Peterson each added a service ace. 
 
The Gorloks and Golden Eagles continued the set with back-and-forth action as the set rallied to an 18-9 Webster advantage. Moments later, Spalding cut the lead down to four at 18-14 with a 5-0 run. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks regained the seven-point advantage at 21-14 with a 3-0 run that included a kill by White. Webster closed out the set with a 4-1 run that featured two kills by White and a kill by Morio that led to a 25-17 set-victory. 

Webster jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the third set that included two kills by White and McGrath while Tarlos and Jones each added a kill. Spalding cut the deficit down to one at 9-8 with a 5-0 run. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks countered with a 5-1 run that took the 14-10 lead. In the run, Jones and Zablonski added a kill each while Tarlos capped off the run with back-to-back kills. 

Following the Tarlos kill, Spalding took the lead at 19-15 with a 9-1 run but the Gorloks answered with a 3-0 run that cut the deficit down to one at 19-18. Moments later, the Golden Eagles added a 3-0 run that made the set-score 22-18. The Gorloks battled hard but drop the set. 

The Gorloks and Golden Eagles opened the four set exchanging points to a 3-2 Webster advantage that included kills by Tarlos, McGrath, and Tarlos. However, Spalding regained the lead at 11-5 with a 8-2 run as McGrath added another kill to her day. Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth as the Gorloks cut the deficit down to five at 14-9 with back-to-back kills by Tarlos. 

Webster and Spalding continued the set exchanging 3-0 runs to the set-score of 12-17 as Olivia Powell and Jones collected an assisted block while Powell added a kill. Shortly later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to three at 18-21 with a 4-1 run that included two kills by White and was capped off with an assisted block by Jones and Tarlos. The Gorloks had a late offensive push that included a kill by Madison Katz and Powell but Spalding took the set and forced a fifth set.  

In the final set, the Gorloks and Golden Eagles battled to a tie at three apiece. After a point by Spalding, Webster answered with a 3-0 run and took the 6-4 lead that included kills by Zablonski and White. However, the Golden Eagles countered with a 5-1 run and took the 9-7 advantage. Moments later, the Gorloks added another 3-0 run that took the 10-9 advantage that featured kills by Katz and Jones. Immediately following the Gorlok run, the Golden Eagles closed out the set with a 6-1 run that ultimately led to the defeat.  

For the match, White led the offensive attack with 14 kills while McGrath and Tarlos contributed nine each. Setters Biedenstein and Morio combined for 43 assists led by Biedenstein with 25. Defensively, five student-athletes recorded a double-digit dig mark led by Morio with 17 as Tarlos achieved  a career-high seven assisted blocks. 


Match 2: Webster 0, Westminster 3
 
The Gorloks opened the night-cap decision with a 6-0 run that started on a kill by Zablonski. Also in the run, Tarlos recorded a solo block and kill as the run was capped off with a kill by Katz. Shortly later, Westminster cut the lead down to two at 9-7 with a 5-1 run. 

Webster and Westminster continued the set by exchanging points as the Gorloks took the 12-9 advantage. With the three-point lead, the Gorloks increased the lead to seven at 16-9 with a 4-0 run that included two assisted blocks by Tarlos and Powell and a kill by Zablonski. Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth and rallied the set to a 21-16 Webster advantage. However, the Blue Jays closed out the opening set with nine unanswered points.

The Gorloks and Blue Jays opened the second set exchanging points to a tie at four apiece. Moments later, Westminster added a 7-2 run that took the 11-6 advantage. Immediately following the WC run, the Gorloks cut the deficit to two at 11-9 with a 3-0 run. In the run, Katz and Tarlos added a kill while Powell and Tarlos earned an assisted block. Following a kill by Tarlos, the Blue Jays countered with a 12-1 run that made the set-score 23-10. Webster scored their final points of the set with three kills; two by White and one by McGrath as Westminster took the set. 

Webster and Westminster opened the final set exchanging points to a tie at six apiece. In that rally, Lauren Brown, Katz, and Jones each added a kill while McGrath and Powell captured an assisted block. Moments later, the Gorloks took the 9-8 lead with a 3-0 run that included a solo block and a kill by White. However, the Blue Jays closed out the set with a 17-1 run that took the match. 

For the match, Katz led the offensive attack with six kills while Jones contributed three. Biedenstein recorded her 20th double-digit assist mark of the season with 10 assists. Defensively, Jaycee Lewis led with 12 digs while Powell and Tarlos added four blocks each. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Tuesday, October 29 hosting Eureka College for the annual Dig Pink match starting at 7:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
