Men’s Soccer Score Three First Half Goals In Draw To Greenville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer closed out a two-game homestand with a conference match against Greenville University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks and Panthers battled the full 90 minutes that resulted in a 3-3 draw.

In the opening two minutes of play, the Gorloks and Panthers each got the night started with a goal apiece. At the 1:43 marker, WU's Scott Price sent a fantastic entry pass in the box to Hayden Hatley when he was fouled in the box for a penalty kick. Moments later, Hatley dotted a lower left penalty kick to the back of the net that gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead.

Less than 30 seconds later, the Panthers sent the ball into Gorlok territory that resulted in a goal by Ivan Cano-Mayayo that tied the match at one apiece. For the next 20 minutes of play, Webster and Greenville each recorded a shot but the match remained tied.

In the 23rd minute, Price collected a bombing goal kick off the foot of Luke Dillon when he turned and sent the ball in the box for Elmin Lemes. After a stall move by Lemes, he found a cutting Price to net when Price blasted a shot in the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.

For the next 10 minutes of action, the Gorloks and Panthers recorded two shots toward the net as both goalkeepers tallied a save. In the 34th minute, the Panthers attempted to clear the ball out of their territory when Lemes intercepted the pass. Lemes collected the ball, juked out a GU defender, and blasted a sliding right shot in the net for the 3-1 lead.

Five minutes later, Greenville was awarded a free kick just inside the midfield line when the free kick ball was sent to the box. After the ball hit the ground near the six-yard box, the Panthers cut the deficit in half at 3-2 with a goal by Gabriel Sule. For the remainder of the half, the Gorloks and Panthers battled with scoreless play as Webster took the 3-2 lead into halftime.

In the 49th minute, Price had a great opportunity for an insurance goal but his shot went over the top of the cross bar that kept the match at 3-2. Shortly later in the 60th minute, the Panthers tied the match at three apiece with a goal by Andres Garcia.

Six minutes later, the Gorloks attacked the offensive side of the pitch resulting in a shot by Noah Thomas but it was saved by Valon Ismaili. In the 70th minute, first-year Aiden Sopov ripped a shot on goal that was saved as his rebound shot was also saved by Ismaili. In the final 10 minutes of play, Webster added three shots but unfortunately could not get past Ismaili that resulted in a draw.

For the match, Price led the offensive attack with five shots while Hatley, Thomas, and Sopov added three shots each.

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road trip across town to Fontbonne University on Wednesday, October 9 to face off against the Griffins starting at 4:00PM in St. Louis, Missouri.
