Gorloks Fall Short To Panthers In SLIAC Semifinals

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team continued post-season play in the 2024 SLIAC Volleyball Tournament with the semifinal match against Greenville University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks fought hard against the Panthers but fell short by the final score of 1-3 which concluded their season. 

Webster opened the match with the early 4-1 advantage that included a kill by Lauren Harms that was assisted by Delaney Morio. Moments later, Greenville tied the set at four apiece with three consecutive kills by Anna Beth Vancil. The Gorloks and Panthers continued the set exchanging points to a tie at nine apiece. 

With the set tied, Webster took the 13-10 lead with a 4-1 run that started on a kill by Grace White. Two services later, first-year Leah McGrath closed out the set with back-to-back points that included a kill and a service ace. 

Immediately following the WU run, the Panthers countered with a 8-1 run that took the 18-14 lead. Moments later, Greenville closed out the set with a 6-1 run for the early set advantage.

Greenville opened the second set with the 7-2 advantage as one of the Gorloks points was achieved on a kill by Alyssa Jones. After both teams exchanged a point, Webster answered back with a 5-0 run that tied the set at eight apiece. In the run, Eva Tarlos and Tyler Ramstack each added a kill while the duo teamed up and recorded an assisted block. 

Webster and Greenville continued the set with back-and-forth action as the set rallied to a tie at 14 apiece. Moments later, the Panthers responded with a 5-1 run that took the 19-15 lead. Immediately following the GU run, Webster answered with a 4-1 run that cut the deficit down to one at 20-19 that started on a kill by Ellie Biedenstein. In addition, McGrath added another kill to her night while capped it off with a service ace. However, Greenville countered with a 5-1 run that ultimately closed out the set by the score of 25-20. 

The Gorloks opened the third set with the early 6-3 advantage that included two kills by McGrath and an assisted block by Jones and White. Moments later, Webster answered with an 8-2 run which generated a nine-point advantage at 14-5. In the run, Tarlos added two kills while Jones, McGrath, and Megan Zablonski contributed one kill each. The run was capped off with an assisted block by Ramstack and White. 

Shortly later, the Panthers cut the lead down to five at 16-11 with a 6-2 run. Immediately following the GU run, Webster increased their lead back to eight a 20-12 with a 4-1 run. In the run, Jaycee Lewis recorded a service ace which was followed up with a kill by McGrath. The Gorloks answered right back in the set with a 4-2 run that started on a kill by Ramstack. WU's White achieved set-point with a kill and teamed up with Jones for an assisted block that earned the 25-17 set-victory.  

Webster opened the final set with the early 3-0 advantage that included kills by Ramstack and McGrath while Zablonski added a service ace. Moments later, Greenville responded with a 5-0 run that generated a two-point deficit at 5-3. The deficit did not last long as the Gorloks countered with a 5-1 run that took the 8-6 lead. In the run, McGrath contributed two kills while Jones and White added one apiece. 

Immediately following the WU run, Greenville answered back with a 6-0 run that generated a 12-8 deficit. The Gorloks and Panthers continued the set with back-and-forth play that generated a 23-16 Greenville advantage. Webster spurted off a 5-0 run that cut the deficit down to two at 23-21. In the run, Tarlos added two kills while teaming up with Ramstack for an assisted block. However, the Panthers closed out the set with back-to-back points that ended the Gorloks season. 

For the match, first-year McGrath led the offensive attack with 10 kills while White and Tarlos added seven each. Setters Biedenstein and Morio combined for 35 assists as four student-athletes recorded one service ace. Defensively, Lewis led with a team-high 19 digs while Tarlos recorded a team-high four assisted blocks.
