Gorloks Shutout Blue Jays To Advance To SLIAC Semifinals Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team opened SLIAC post-season play as the third-seed and hosted sixth-seeded Westminster College for the quarterfinals match Saturday afternoon. WU's Elmin Lemes and Noah Thomas net second half goals that lead to the 2-0 shutout victory over the Blue Jays. With the victory, the Gorloks advance to the semifinals match. 

In the early portion of the match, Webster and Westminster battled back-and-forth with no shots. In the 13th minute, WU's Hayden Hatley recorded the first shot on goal but his shot was saved by Toby Hughes. Shortly later, in the 22nd minute, the Blue Jays had their first scoring opportunity when Nathan Naumann took a shot but Luke Dillon collected the save. 

Five minutes later, Westminster constructed another scoring opportunity but it was eliminated by Dillon. Midway through the first half, the Gorloks passed their way into the attacking zone when Danny Nusinovic ripped on a shot toward the goal but the shot went out. 

For the remainder of the half, the Gorloks added three shots in the match from Noah Abraham, Patrick Fuller, and Oscar Solis but all attempts went out wide or high that lead to a scoreless first half. 

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Blue Jays sent the ball into Gorloks territory that resulted in a shot over the net by Tyler Christle. Less than two minutes later, in the 51st minute, Webster countered with an offensive attack near the box when Lemes ripped a shot in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. 

Following the goal by Lemes, the Gorloks attacked the Blue Jays defense that resulted in two corner kicks. On the second corner kick, Patrick Fuller ripped a shot on goal but it was saved by Hughes. 

For the next 20 minutes of play, both teams battled between the endlines as the Gorloks added four shots from Scott Price, Logan Hazel, Lemes and Andy Mujezinovic. In the 77th minute, Webster sent the ball into the attacking box when Thomas blasted a shot to the right post that took the 2-0 advantage. 

On the ensuing Westminster kickoff, the Blue Jays attacked the Gorlok defense that resulted in a shot by Nahan Naumann aa Dillon made the save. For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks held strong defensively which led to the shutout victory. 

For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Blue Jays 16-7 led by Hatley with three shots while four other student-athletes tied with two shots apiece. Defensively, Dillon recorded four saves and leads the conference with four shutouts. 

The Gorloks will continue post-season play with a visit to second-seeded Principia College on Wednesday, November 6 starting at 7:30PM in Elsah, Illinois.
