WU’s Biedenstein Surpasses 1,000 Career Assists In Non-Conference Finale To Monmouth

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team concluded the non-conference portion of the schedule by hosting Monmouth College Tuesday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks battled the Fighting Scots but dropped the match by the final score of 1-3. In the match, WU's Ellie Biedenstein eclipsed the historic career milestone of 1,000 career assists in a Gorlok uniform. 

The Gorloks opened the match with the service which resulted in a kill by senior Alyssa Jones. Following that kill by Jones, Monmouth immediately answered with the 6-1 run that generated a four-point deficit at 2-6. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to three at 5-8 that included a solo block by Jones and a kill by Megan Zablonski

Immediately following the Zablonski kill, the Fighting Scots countered with a 8-0 run that increased the deficit to 5-16. The Gorloks exchanged points with the Fighting Scots that included a kill by first-years Leah McGrath and Lauren Harms. In addition, Grace White contributed a kill while Delaney Morio added a service ace. However, Monmouth closed out the set with a 7-1 run that took the opening set. 

Webster and Monmouth began the second set exchanging points to a tie at four apiece that included another kill by Zablonski. After a kill by the Fighting Scots, the Gorloks answered with a 6-1 run that took the 10-6 advantage. In the run, the Gorloks hammered down four kills led by McGrath with two as Eva Tarlos and Zablonski added one each while Biedenstein added a service ace.

Two points later, the Gorloks responded with a 5-1 run that took the 15-9 advantage that included two kills by White. In addition, White and Zablonski connected on an assisted block as it was capped off with another service ace by Morio. 

Following back-to-back points by Monmouth, Webster took the 19-13 lead with a 4-2 run that included a total of four kills; two by White and one each by Jaycee Lewis and McGrath. Immediately following the Gorlok run, the Fighting Scots chipped back and took the 22-21 advantage with a 9-2 run. Moments later, Webster achieved set-point at 24-22 that included another kill by White. 

The Fighting Scots immediately answered with a 3-0 run that took the advantage at 25-24. Webster answered and regained the 26-25 advantage with consecutive points that included a solo block by Jones. Monmouth answered right back with back-to-back kills for the 27-26 advantage. 

With the one-point deficit, the Gorloks countered with back-to-back kills by Jones and White that took the 28-27 lead. Moments later, the Fighting Scots took the 31-30 lead when Tarlos evened the set at 31 apiece with a kill. After a kill by Monmouth, Tarlos answered with another match-extending kill that tied the set at 32 all. However, the Fighting Scots took the set by the final score of 34-32. 

The Gorloks and Fighting Scots opened the third set with back-and-forth play that rallied to a tie at two apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 5-1 run that took the 7-3 advantage which started on a kill by White. In addition, Tarlos and McGrath each added another kill to their night while Lewis added a service ace. 

Both teams continued the set by constructing two identical 2-0 runs which rallied the set to a Gorlok advantage at 12-9. With the three-point advantage, Webster doubled their lead to six at 16-10 that included a 4-1 run. In the run, Zablonski added a kill and a service ace while McGrath and White added one kill each. 

The Fighting Scots rallied back in the set and cut the lead down to one at 19-18 with a 8-2 run. Immediately following the Monmouth run, Webster achieved set-point at 24-20 with a 5-2 run. In the run, Zablonski added two kills while Tyler Ramstack added one. Jones capped off the run with a kill and solo block. After back-to-back kills by Monmouth, McGrath closed out the set with a kill. 

In the final set, White began the scoring with a solo block. Immediately following the block, the Fighting Scots countered with a 11-3 run that took the 11-4 lead. The Gorloks avenged three of those points and cut the deficit down to four at 11-7 with a 3-0 run that included a service ace by McGrath. 

Moments later, Monmouth answered with a 9-1 run that generated the 8-20 deficit. However, the Gorloks scored their final three points of the match on two kills by Zablonski and a kill by White.   

For the match, White and McGrath led the team with 10 kills each while Zablonski contributed nine. Setters Biedenstein and Morio combined for 39 assists led by Morio with 21. Defensively, Lewis secured a career-high 31 digs as Zablonski collected 16 while Jones recorded three solo blocks. 

The Gorloks will close out the regular season with two conference matches this Saturday, November 9 hosting the WU Tri-match starting against Mississippi University for Women at 10:00AM which will be followed up with a match against Blackburn College starting at 2:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
