Late Spalding Goal Eliminates Gorloks In SLIAC Championship Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team hosted the Golden Eagles of Spalding University for the 2024 SLIAC Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday at Moss Field. The Gorloks trailed early but tied the match at one apiece in the second half with a goal by fifth-year Noah Abraham. Spalding answered with a goal in the final minutes of play that defeated the Gorloks.

In the first 15 minutes of play, the Gorloks and Golden Eagles battled back-and-forth as Spalding recorded three shots but all attempts went out high. Shortly later, in the 23rd minute, the Golden Eagles struck first on the scoreboard with a goal by Mustafa Almohammedawi.

Less than eight minutes later, Webster advanced the ball into the attacking zone when Logan Hazel ripped a shot that went out left. That shot by Hazel was the only shot of the first half for the Gorloks. Webster went into the halftime break down one.

Spalding added the first shot of the second half in the 54th minute on a kick from Forte Bess but WU's Luke Dillon made the save. Shortly later, in the 61st minute, WU's Jack Thompson recorded the first shot on goal for the Gorloks but his attempt was collected by Micah Mattes. Seconds later, the Gorloks were awarded a corner kick that resulted in a shot just out left by Oscar Solis

On the next offensive attack by the Gorloks, in the 64th minute, Chase Boushard sent in a fantastic cross that found the foot of Abraham for the goal that tied the match at one apiece.

Ten minutes later, in the 74th minute, Webster advanced the ball back into the attacking box that resulted in shots on goal by Danny Nusinovic and Scott Price as Mattes made both saves. Shortly later, in the 80th minute, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity when Patrick Fuller blasted a shot on goal but it was saved by Mattes.

Eight minutes later, in the 87th minute, Spalding countered with an attack that resulted in a goal by Eddie Mende-Perez.

In the final two minutes of the match, the Gorloks sent the ball into the attacking box that resulted in shots by Noah Thomas and Price but neither attempt found the back of the net.

For the match, Price led the offensive attack with four shots while Abraham and Nusinovic added two each. In goal, Dillon recorded three saves.
