Women’s Soccer Fall To Panthers In SLIAC Championship Match

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team traveled to Greenville University for the 2024 SLIAC Women's Soccer Championship match on Saturday afternoon. WU's Malaya Blakely netted the first goal of the match but Greenville responded with two second half goals that generated the 2-1 defeat.

In the early minutes of the match, the Gorloks pressured the Panthers defense and earned two corner kicks but could not get a foot on either attempt. For the next several minutes, Webster and Greenville battled back-and-forth with no shots.

In the 13th minute, the Gorloks advanced the ball to the attacking box on an entry pass from Sienna Inouye when Payton Montana used a header pass that found Blakely in the middle of the box. After one dribble toward the goal, Blakely blasted a left-footed shot in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, in the 18th minute, the Gorloks recorded their second shot of the match when senior Mya Stegen ripped a shot that went out high.

The goal by Blakely and shot by Stegen were the only two shots of the first half as the Gorlok defense did not allow a shot to the Panthers and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the Panthers attacked the Gorloks defense which resulted in a goal by Allyson Schultz.

Nine minutes later, in the 54th minute, Greenville sent the ball near the Gorlok defensive box that resulted in the second goal of the match by Schultz.

Shortly later, the Gorloks added two great scoring opportunities in the 61st minute on shots by seniors Stegen and Grace Rodgers. The shot by Stegen was saved by Addison Miller while Rodger's shot went out high.

In the 69th minute, the Gorloks advanced the ball into the attacking zone that resulted in two scoring opportunities on shots by Claire Thurmond and Stegen but both attempts were out wide.

For the remainder of the match, Webster and Greenville battled back-and-forth with scoreless play that generated the final score.

For the match, senior midfielder Stegen led the offensive attack with three shots while Blakely, Rodgers, and Thurmond each recorded one. In goal, Courtney Haneline recorded two saves.
