SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the North Park (Ill.) University Vikings and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they defeated North Park by a final score of 3-2 in 10 innings and then defeated UW-Oshkosh by a final score of 8-3 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
It was a pitchers dual to start the first game as neither side was able to getting anything going offensively through the first five innings of the game. The Vikings broke into the scoring column with a run in the top of the sixth, but an RBI single from
Nathaniel Martinez in the bottom half of the frame tied the score at one. The teams would exchange runs in the seventh to keep the game tied, but a walk-off RBI single from
Nathaniel Martinez in the bottom of the 10
th solidified the win for Webster.
Kevin Corcoran was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits while striking out eight in 5.0 scoreless innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched the next inning for Webster as he allowed two hits while striking out two.
Caleb Zbrozek pitched the final four innings for Webster allowing just one hit while striking out seven.
Webster put together 12 hits in the game.
Nathaniel Martinez led the way for the Gorloks as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
James Theodore and
Parker Murrow also recorded multi-hit games as Theodore went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Murrow went 2-for-4. In addition,
Karl Peters went 1-for-5 with an RBI and
Sage Hurley scored a run.
Webster got off to a great start in their second game of the day as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings of the game. The Titans would battle back and score two runs in the top of the third and a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3, but three runs from the Gorloks in the bottom of the fourth gave Webster a 7-3 advantage. Webster would score one more run in the seventh and hold off the Titans down the stretch to solidify the win.
Ryan Greifelt (2-0) had another great start for the Gorloks as he allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out four in 7.0 innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched in relief as he struck out two while not allowing any hits in the final 2.0 innings.
Webster rallied for 12 hits in the game.
Karl Peters led the way for Webster as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Parker Murrow and
Andrew Fazio also recorded multi-hit games as Murrow went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Fazio went 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition,
James Theodore added two RBI while
R.J. LaRocco and
Nathaniel Martinez each added one.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond tomorrow when they host the North Park (Ill.) University Vikings for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. at Grizzlies Ballpark.
