SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Bears by a final score of 10-6 to drop to 7-8 on the season. With the win, the Bears improve to 14-5 on the year.
The Gorloks got off to a slow start in this one as the Bears rallied for four runs in the first three inning to take a 4-0 lead. Webster would get on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI double from
R.J. LaRocco, but another run from the Bears in the top of the fourth would put them up 5-1 in the game.
Evan Evola would cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth with his first homerun of the season, but four runs over the next two innings would put the Bears up 9-2 heading into the bottom half of the frame. The Gorloks would cut the lead to five in the bottom of the sixth, but another run from the Bears in the top of the seventh would extend their lead back out to six. Webster would score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bears would close the Gorloks out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Kevin Corcoran (1-2) got the start in this one as he allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out one in 3.0 innings.
Ryan Greifelt pitched the next three innings for Webster allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out three.
Jeremy Yanow and
Caleb Zbrozek would pitch the final three innings for Webster allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Webster put together 13 hits in the contest.
Karl Peters,
James Theodore,
R.J. LaRocco, and
Parker Murrow all recorded multi-hit games as Peters went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Theodore went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, LaRocco went 2-for-5 with three RBI, and Murrow went 2-for-5. In addition,
Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-5 with an RBI while
Evan Evola went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 23
rd when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, to kick off SLIAC play against Principia (Ill.) College. Webster will play a doubleheader against the Panthers starting at 1 p.m.
