Gorloks Sweep Rose-Hulman

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 3-2 and the second game by a final score of 6-3 to improve to 13-7-1 on the season. With the sweep, the Fighting Engineers drop to 8-6 on the season.

After three and a half scoreless innings to start the game, Webster was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as they rallied for two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Fighting Engineers would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, but a solo homerun from Paige Thomas (3) in the bottom of the fifth gave Webster a 3-1 lead late in the contest. Rose-Hulman would score in the top of the seventh, but the Gorloks picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Ainsley Hinz (2-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just four hits and an earned run while striking out three in her first complete game of the season.

Webster rallied for 10 hits in the contest. Jaelin Holdaway and Reese Waggoner both recorded multi-hit games as Holdaway went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Waggoner went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In addition, Paige Thomas went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun while Emma Bovaconti went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Rose-Hulman got off to a quick start in the second game of the day as they scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks would tie the game in the bottom of the third, and then rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. The Fighting Engineers would cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but a two-run homerun from Emma Bovaconti in the bottom of the sixth would put the Gorloks up three and solidify their fifth straight win.

Madi Stichling (2-0) was in the circle for this one as she allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in her second complete game of the season.

Webster put together seven hits in their second game. Emma Bovaconti led the way as she went 2-for-2 with two two-run homeruns (2). Katie Croxall also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3. Lastly, Kaelyn Kearney recorded an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Friday, March 29th when they host the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for their first SLIAC doubleheader of the season. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second to follow at St. Joseph's Academy.
