ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action yesterday when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 6-3 before winning the second game by a final score of 8-0 (5 inn.) to improve to 22-9-1 on the season and 9-2 in conference play. With the sweep, Westminster drops to 6-30 on the year and 2-12 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks found themselves trailing early in the first game of the day as the Blue Jays scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Webster answered with three runs in the bottom of he first to take a 3-1 lead, but two runs from Westminster in the top of the second tied the score at three. The Gorloks would break the tie in the bottom of the third and then scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the win.
Ainsley Hinz (4-2) got the start in this one as she allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 4.1 innings of work.
Madi Stichling recorded the save as she allowed just two hits while striking out two in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Webster tallied nine hits in the game.
Katie Croxall led the way for Webster as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Kaelyn Kearney also recorded a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. In addition,
Paige Thomas,
Reese Waggoner,
Alyssa Lyell, and
Emma Bovaconti each added an RBI.
The Gorloks carried their momentum over into the second game of the day as they scored six runs in the bottom of the second, capped off by a three-run homerun from
Jaelin Holdaway (1), to take an early lead. Webster would go on to add a run in the bottom of the fourth and a run in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the sweep.
Reese Waggoner (6-3) was in the circle to start this one as she allowed just three hits while striking out three in 4.0 scoreless innings.
Cheyenne Dickens pitched in relief as she did not allow a hit in the final inning of the game.
Webster put together eight hits in the game.
Lucy St. John,
Madi Stichling, and
Katie Croxall each recorded multi-hit games as St. John went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Stichling went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Croxall went 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition,
Jaelin Holdaway went 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun.
The Gorloks will return to the field on Monday, April 29
th when they host Lyon (Ark.) College for a SLIAC matchup. The single game will start at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph's Academy.
