Gorloks Advance in Winners Bracket

O'FALLON, Mo. – The Webster University baseball team kicked off postseason play yesterday with a SLIAC Semifinal matchup against the fourth seeded Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in O'Fallon, Missouri. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 5-4 to advance to the winners bracket of the SLIAC Baseball Tournament.
 
The Panthers got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the top of the first and a run in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Gorloks would answer with two runs in the bottom of the second and then added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead in the game. Spalding would respond with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the score at three, and then both teams brought a run across in the sixth to keep the score tied late in the game. With the score tied at four in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Schumacher hit a walk-off RBI single to solidify the win for Webster.
 
Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out four in 3.2 innings. Caleb Zbrozek (3-1) pitched the final 5.1 innings for Webster as he allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out three.
 
Webster recorded 10 hits in the game. Evan Evola led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. In addition, Nick Schumacher went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Ben Stedman went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Karl Peters added two RBI.
 
The Gorloks will be back in action this afternoon when they take on the top seeded Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a chance to play in the SLIAC Championship Round. The game is set to start at 2:30 p.m. at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
