Montana Nets Game-Winning Goal; Gorloks Extend Win Streak To Four Games With 2-1 Victory Over Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued conference play with a road match at Lyon College. The Gorloks scored two second half goals; one by Mayrin Soto while Payton Montana netted the game-winning goal in the 80th minute that secured the 2-1 victory over the Scots. With the victory, Webster improves to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play and extends their win streak to four games. 

In the opening minutes of the match, the Gorloks pressured the Scots defense with shots by Payton Harting and Sofia Bosnos but the match remained scoreless. In addition, Webster recorded four corner kicks but did not find a shot on either attempt. In the 11th minute, Lyon constructed a counter attack with a shot on goal but it was saved by Kayla Jantzen. Shortly later, in the 18th minute, Mia Smith had a great chance to crack the scoring but her shot on goal was saved by Jessie Stauffer.

Less than nine minutes later, in the 26th minute, Webster orchestrated a counter attack that resulted in a shot on net by Montana but it was saved by Stauffer. Shortly later, in the 32nd minute, the Scots had a great chance on goal as a shot by Emilee Simpson hit the crossbar but no rebound shot was found. For the remainder of the first half, both teams battled back-and-forth as the score remained scoreless at halftime.  

Webster and Lyon opened the second half battling between the endlines with back-and-forth play. Shortly later, in the 50th minute, Smith had another great look at the net but her shot on goal was saved. Moments later, in the 52nd minute, the Gorloks responded with a counter attack when Soto cracked the scoring with a goal for the 1-0 lead which was assisted by Malaya Blakely

Ten minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Lyon countered back with a goal by Simpson that tied that match at one apiece. For the next 18 minutes of play, Riley Cappozzo and Isabelle Schumacher added one shot each toward the net but attempts missed wide. Moments later, in the 80th minute, Webster added a counter attack that resulted in a goal by Montana which was assisted by Jasmine Hubbard. For the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Gorloks defense held off a late offensive push by Lyon that included a save by Jantzen for the victory. 

For the match, Smith led the attack with three shots while Cappozzo, Montana, and Elin Nilsson recorded two shots each. In net, Jantzen secured two saves and her sixth victory of the season.
