WU’s McBride Eliminates North Park In Walkoff Fashion; Records Multi-Home Run Performance In Victory Over Titans

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their non-conference schedule by hosting North Park University on Saturday at Grizzlies Ballpark. WU's Cullen McBride had a fantastic day in the box and recorded six rbi's that included two home runs and walked off game one with a two-run single. With a sweep of the day, the Gorloks improve to 4-3 overall on the season. 

Game 1: Webster 2, North Park 1
Senior right-handed pitcher Carter Hunt got the start on the mound and recorded back-to-back strikeouts that ended the first inning. In the top of the second, Hunt worked out of a jam by adding two more strikeouts that kept the game scoreless. 

In the top of the third, the Vikings struck first on the scoreboard with a solo home run by Alex DiVito.  In the top of the fifth, Hunt worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a line out to Evan Evola at first base that kept the 1-0 deficit. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Karl Peters recorded the first Gorlok hit of the game which was a bunt single to down the third base line. Unfortunately, he was left on base as the Vikings got out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Webster called upon reliever Jacob Maza out of the bullpen as got in a jam after a walk and a single. With runners on the corners and no outs, Maza caught the runner on first leaning toward second as the runner was tagged out at second by Peters. The next North Park hitter in Nate Sommerfeld hit a grounder to Ben Stedman as he threw out the runner trying to advance to home that kept the game at the 1-0 deficit. Moments later, Webster called upon reliever Zach Mevert out of the pen as he recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Gorloks called on reliever Shane LeJeune-DeAcutis as he recorded his first scoreless inning of the season. In the top of the ninth inning, Webster made their final pitching change of the game and entered in the southpaw in Collin Johnson. Johnson worked out of a jam that kept the deficit at 1-0. In the bottom of the ninth, James Theodore led off the inning with a single to center. The next batter in Evola ripped a double to the center that advanced Theodore to third. With no out, McBride ripped a single to left that scored Theodore and Evola for the walk off winner. 

For the game, the Gorloks recorded four hits as McBride drove in the only runs of the game. On the mound, Hunt pitched six complete innings and struck out five. Webster used four relievers in the final four innings as neither student-athletes allowed a run. 


Game 2: Webster 10, UW-Oshkosh 6
In the nightcap decision, the Gorloks fell in an early four-run deficit after the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Peters led off with a single to left, stole second, and advanced to third on a flyout. With two outs, the Gorloks got a run back on a rbi single to center by McBride that scored Peters. 

In the top of the second, reliever J.T. Miller earned his first scoreless inning of the season that included a strikeout. In the bottom frame, the Gorloks erupted for a six-run inning that started on a two-run homerun by Nick Wrubluski that cut the deficit to one at 4-3. With two outs, Peters and Theodore reached back with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners, Peters scored on a Titan error that tied the game at four apiece. WU's Evola followed up with an rbi single to right that scored Theodore for the 5-4 lead. Moments later, McBride stepped in the box and launched a two-run homerun over the right field wall that stretched the Gorlok lead to 7-4.

In the top of the third, the Titans got a run back on a wild pitch issued by Miller that made the score 7-5. In the top of the fourth, Miller recorded the first two outs while reliever Connor Jackson closed out the inning with his first strikeout of the season.  In the bottom of the fifth, McBride led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall that increased the lead to 8-5. 

In the top of the seventh, the Titans added a run in the seventh with a solo home run that made the score 8-6. Following a single by UW-Oshkosh, Webster called upon McBride as he took over on the mound. He got out of the inning without allowing a run and struck out one. 

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Gorloks added two insurance runs that made the score 10-8. The first run scored in the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Theodore that scored pinch runner Quinton Johnston. The second run of the single came on an rbi single by Evola that scored Peters. McBride returned to the mound in the ninth and added a strikeout that helped generate the sweep of the day. 

For the game, McBride recorded his first multi-home run game of the season and drove in four. He closed out the final 2.2 innings on the mound and struck out a team-high four batters. In addition, three Gorloks recorded two hits each as Peters scored three times. 

In addition to McBride on the mound, Miller recorded three strikeouts as Jackson added the other strikeout for the game. 

The Gorloks will close out home-opening weekend with a rematch decision against North Park University on Sunday, March 2 starting at 2:00PM at Grizzlies Ballpark.
