Gorloks Score Nine Runs Early That Propelled To Victory Over Immaculata

DAVENPORT, Flor. - The Webster University baseball team continued spring break action in the Sunshine State with a decision against Immaculata University on Monday. The Gorloks scored nine runs in the first two innings that led to a 9-6 victory over the Mighty Macs. With the victory, Webster improves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in Florida.

Webster was the away team in this decision and opened the game with a five-run inning that started on a lead off double to left by Karl Peters. Moments later, Evan Evola ripped an rbi double to right that scored Peters for the early 1-0 advantage. Shortly later, R.J. LaRocco reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With two runners on base, Ryan Hartz laced a single to center that scored Evola that took the 2-0 lead. Following that single Hartz, Ethan Wielt smashed a two-run double to center that scored LaRocco and Hartz that stretched the lead to 4-0. After a walk drawn by Nick Wrubluski, Ben Stedman capped off the scoring for the inning with an rbi single to center that scored Wielt that made the score 5-0. 

WU's J.T. Miller got the start on the mound and recorded a scoreless first inning that included two strikeouts. In the bottom of the second, the Gorloks answered with a four-run inning that started on a lead off infield single by James Theodore as he advanced to second with a stolen second. Moments later, Theodore advanced to third and later scored on a rbi ground out by Cullen McBride that made the score 6-0. Following a walk drawn by LaRocco, Hartz blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall that increased the lead to 8-0. Wielt kept the inning going as he was awarded first base via hit-by-pitch. Moments later, Wrubluski reached base on an error that advanced Wielt to third. WU's Stedman capped off the scoring for the inning with an rbi double to center that scored Wielt that made the score 9-0. 

In the bottom of the second, Miller recorded his second consecutive scoreless inning that included a pair of strikeouts. In the bottom of the third, Miller capped off his outing with two strikeouts that led to his third straight scoreless inning. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Webster called upon reliever Zach Mevert as he recorded the first out of the inning with a strikeout. Moments later, Immaculata's Sal Serici hit a two-run double that made the score 9-2. After a walk issued by Mevert, Webster made a pitching change to Scott Detweiler. With runners on the corners, the Mighty Macs added a run on a rbi single by Blake Schantz that made the score 9-3. With the bases loaded, Detweiler walked in a run that made the score 9-4 that ended his day. Webster made their fourth pitching change of the game and called in reliever McBride. The first batter McBride saw resulted in a two-run single to center that cut the lead down to 9-6. 

For the next three innings, McBride shut down the Mighty Macs and earned three strikeouts. In the bottom of the eighth, Webster made their final pitching change of the game and called upon Joel Arsenault. Arsenault closed out the final two innings and recorded three strikeouts.  

For the game, Hartz led the team with three rbi's on two hits. In addition, Stedman and Wielt drove in two each while Evola recorded two hits. LaRocco, Hartz, and Wielt all scored twice. On the mound, Webster used five pitchers and combined for 14 strikeouts as Miller recorded a new season-high with six. 

The Gorloks will have the next two days off and will resume spring break play with a rematch decision against Rhodes College on Thursday, March 13 starting at 11:00AM eastern time in Lakeland, Florida.
