Gorloks Erupt For 15 Runs In Sixth Inning To Defeat Raiders 18-6 In Spring Break Finale

WINTER HAVEN, Flor. - The Webster University baseball team concluded their spring break trip in Florida with a decision against Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday morning at Lake Of Chains Field. The Gorloks erased a three-run deficit with a 15-run sixth inning that led to a 18-6 victory over the Raiders in seven innings. With the victory, Webster improves to 10-5 overall and finished the trip 5-2. 

Webster was the home team in this decision as Elijah Rompala-Matthews took the mound for his fifth start of the season and recorded a scoreless inning. In the bottom half, Evan Evola got the inning started with a two-out double to left center. Moments later, WU's Cullen McBride laced a single through the left side that scored Evola for the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Rompala-Matthews struck out the first batter he saw for his first strikeout of the game. Shortly later, the Raiders tied at one apiece on back-to-back hits. 

In the top of the third, the Raiders got runners on the corners following a single, a balk, and bunt single. Moments later, MSOE executed the double-steal attempt that scored Jack Kalitowski for the 2-1 lead. In the bottom half, Karl Peters led off the inning with a double down the left field line. WU's James Theodore reached base on a bunt single that advanced Peters to third. The next batter in Evola reached second on an error by MSOE's left fielder that scored Peters that tied the game at 2-2 as Theodore advanced to third. Shortly later, Evola scored on a wild pitch that put the Gorloks on top at 3-2. 

In the top of the fifth, the Raiders added four runs in the inning that generated the 6-3 deficit. In the top of the sixth, reliever Ethan Luzum recorded the first out of the inning with a strikeout and got a groundout that ended his outing. Webster called upon reliever Jack Wilson as he struck out the only batter he saw in the inning. 

In the bottom of sixth, the Gorloks erupted for a season-best 15-runs in the inning that started on a bases-loaded single by Ben Stedman. WU's Peters followed with an rbi single to left that scored Quinton Johnston that cut the deficit to one at 6-5. Still with no outs, Theodore followed suit and laced a two-run single to center that scored Nick Wrubluski and Stedman that took the 7-6 lead.

Following a pitching change by the Raiders, McBride extended the lead to 9-4 with a two-run double to left that scored Peters and Theodore. Two batters later, Ryan Hartz reached base on an error by MSOE's catcher that allowed Evola to score which made the score 10-4. Moments later, Nick Schumacher delivered a two-run pinch hit single to right that scored McBride and R.J. LaRocco that stretched the lead to 12-6. After a hit-by-pitch drawn by Wrubluski that loaded the bases, Stedman followed up with an rbi single to center that scored Hartz to the score of 13-6. Moments later, Schumacher scored on a passed ball that made the score 14-6. 

Following a hit-by-pitch by Peters, Theodore ripped a rbi single up the middle that scored Wrubluski for the 15-6 advantage. WU's Evola followed up with an rbi single to right that scored Stedman for the 16-6 lead. With the bases loaded, McBride drew a walk that scored Peters for that made the score 17-6. The Gorloks capped off the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly by LaRocco that scored Theodore that made the score 18-6. 

In the top of the seventh, Wilson closed out the game with a flyout and two strikeouts that helped extend the Gorlok win streak to four games.   

For the game, Webster recorded 16 hits and 16 total rbi's. Theodore led the team with four hits while adding two rbi's. WU's McBride led the team with four rbi's on two hits. Evola recorded a 2-for-3 performance with two rbi's while Stedman went 2-for-4 with two rbi's. Schumacher went 1-for-1 with two rbi's while Peters went 2-for-4 added one rbi.

On the mound, Rompala-Matthews pitched four innings and struck out two. Reliever Jack Wilson struck out three while Luzum added one.   

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Wednesday, March 19 with a crosstown visit to Washington University starting at 2:00PM in St. Louis, Missouri.
