Gorloks Softball Split Final Games In Florida

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team concluded spring break play with a double-header on Friday. The Gorloks opened the day with a nine-inning thrilling 9-6 victory over Defiance College before falling to the University of Hartford by the final of 2-9. 

Game 1: Webster 9, Defiance 7

Webster was the away team in this game and put up three runs in the top of the first. The first run of the game came off the bat of Aven Ragwar-Hayes that scored Work. Following back-to-back walks drawn by Emma Bovaconti and Marah Schotz, Madi Stichling laced a single that loaded the bases. With no outs, Cheyenne Dickens recorded an RBI single that scored Bovaconti for the 2-0 advantage. Adriana Rodriguez capped off the inning scoring with an rbi single that scored Schotz that took the 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets responded with a two-run inning that cut the lead down to one at 3-2. 

In the top of the third, Dickens got the inning started with a two-out double to center. Moments later, Rodriguez hit an infield single to second that scored Dickens that increased the lead to 4-2. 

In the bottom of the third, Defiance countered with a three-run inning that generated the 4-5 deficit. For the next three innings, both teams recorded zero runs.

With a one-run deficit going into the top of the seventh, Hinz started a rally with a lead off single to left. Moments later, Bovaconti singled to third as an error by DC's third baseman that allowed Hinz to score which tied the game at five apiece. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Rodriguez took over on the mound and recorded a scoreless inning that forced extras. 

In the top of the eighth, Dickens was awarded second base due to the international baserunner softball rule and advanced to third on a groundout. Moments later, Abigail Chandler put the Gorloks on top at 6-5 with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Dickens. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 6-6 on back-to-back hits that forced another extra inning. 

In the top of the ninth, the Gorloks scored three runs as the first run of the inning came on a rbi single by Ragwar-Hayes that scored Brie Hale. Following a single by Bovaconti that loaded the bases, Schotz drove in Hinz that made the score 8-6. Two batters later, Dickens reached on an error that allowed Bovaconti to score that increased the lead to 9-6. In the bottom of the ninth, Defiance added a single-run that generated the final score. 

For the game, Rodriguez went 2-for-5 and drove in two. In addition, Dickens recorded a 2-for-5 game that included one rbi. WU's Hinz and Bovaconti recorded two hits as well. Ragwar-Hayes led the team with two rbi's on one hit. Hinz, Bovaconti, and Dickens all scored twice. 

On the mound, Dickens pitched two innings and struck out two batters while Hinz pitched four innings in relief. WU's Rodriguez closed out the final three innings, struck out five, and was credited with her first win of the season. 


Game 2: Webster 2, Hartford 9

Webster was the home team in this decision and got in an early four-run deficit after the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Bovaconti got the inning started with a two-out single up the middle. Moments later, the Gorloks got a run back on a rbi triple to center by Schotz that scored Bovaconti that made the score 1-4.   

In the top of the second, Braidyn Burr recorded a scoreless inning in the circle that included a strikeout. In the bottom half, Ainley Hinz got the inning started with a one-out walk and advanced to second on error. Moments later, Hale reached base on a walk that loaded the bases. However, the Gorloks offensive scoring chance was eliminated, which kept the score at 1-4. 

In the top of the fourth, the Hawks extended their lead to 8-4 with a four-run inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Gorloks got a run back on a rbi single to center that scored Ragwar-Hayes that made the score 2-8. 

In the top of the seventh, Hartford got runners on the corners and added their final run of the game on a double-steal attempt to the score of 2-9 that generated the final score. 

For the game, Bovaconti recorded a team-high three hits while Schotz added two as both student-athletes drove in one rbi each. On the mound,  

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Sunday, March 23 with a road trip to Rose-Hulman for a double-header starting at 12:00PM in Terre Haute, Indiana.
