Gorloks 14-Game Win Streak Snapped Against WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University baseball team traveled across town to Washington University of St. Louis for a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon. The No. 16 Gorloks 14-game win streak came to a close in a 2-9 loss to the Bears. Webster moves to 27-7 overall and 14-6 in non-conference play. 

Webster and WashU opened the game with back-to-back scoreless innings led by starting pitchers J.T. Miller and Parker Guthrie . In the bottom of the third, WashU struck first on the scoreboard with a two-run inning. 

In the top of the fourth, James Theodore led off the inning with a single to center and then stole second. With a runner in scoring position, Evan Evola put the Gorloks on the board with an RBI double down the right field line that scored Theodore. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears responded with a five-run inning with three hits that made the score 1-7. WU's Ethan Luzum recorded the final two outs of the inning that included a strikeout and a fielder's choice play by Ben Stedman at third. In the fifth, Luzum recorded a scoreless inning that included a 4-6-3 double play and a flyout. 

In the top of the sixth, R.J. LaRocco led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch when Cullen McBride advanced LaRocco into scoring position. With one out, Ryan Hartz reached base on a throwing error by WashU that advanced LaRocco to third. Moments later, the Gorloks added a run on a sacrifice fly by Ben Stedman that scored LaRocco that made the score 2-7. In the bottom half, Luzum retired all three batters in the inning with two groundouts and a foul popout made by Evola at first base. 

In the bottom of the eighth, WashU countered with a two-run inning on a two-run home run by Noah Reichman which led to the final score. 

For the game, Theodore recorded two hits, one run, and a stolen base while Evola and Stedman recorded one RBI each. On the mound, Luzum pitched a season-high 4.2 innings that included seven groundouts and a strikeout. Miller pitched three innings and recorded two strikeouts. 

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Wednesday, April 23 hosting Hanover College with first pitch scheduled for 3:00PM at Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
