Gorloks Score 34 Runs In Sweep Over Red Devils

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University softball continued conference play with a road doubleheader at Eureka College on Sunday. The Gorloks captured their second conference sweep of the season with two dominant victories; 18-5 and 16-1 over the Red Devils. Webster With the victories, Webster improves to 9-19 overall and 7-9 in conference play. 

Game 1: Webster 18, Eureka 5

Webster opened the game with the bats as senior Alyssa Lyell recorded the first hit of the game with a one-out double down the right field line. With two outs, Ainlsey Hinz reached base with a walk but both runners were left on base. In the bottom half, junior pitcher Madi Stichling earned her third start of the season as she got into a first inning jam. Eureka recorded four hits that produced three runs for the early 3-0 lead. 

In the top of the second, Marah Schotz and Lili Work got the inning started with back-to-back hit-by-pitches. With two runners on, Brie Hale tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run homerun which was her first career home run. WU's Emma Bovaconti continued the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a single by Lyell. With one out, Cheyenne Dickens reached base on an error by EC's right fielder that allowed Bovaconti to score that took the 4-3 advantage. 

Following a scoreless bottom second inning by Stichling, the Gorloks erupted for a seven-run third inning that started on a walk by Adriana Rodriguez and a hit-by-pitch drawn by Schotz. With no outs, Work reached on a fielder's choice as an error by EC's shortstop allowed Rodriguez to score for the 5-3 lead. Following a one-out single by Bovaconti that loaded the bases, Lyell increased the lead to 6-3 with an infield single that drove in Schotz. 

With the bases still loaded, Dickens laced an infield single to second that scored Work that made the score 7-3. With one out and the bases juiced, Hinz stretched the lead to 8-3 with a RBI single to left that scored Bovaconti. Moments later, Abigail Chandler laced a two-run single through the left side that scored Lyell and Dickens for the 10-3 lead. With two outs, Work pushed the lead to 11-3 with an RBI single to center that scored Chandler that capped off the scoring for the inning. 

In the bottom of the third, the Red Devils got two runs back that made the score 11-5. In the top of the fourth, Bovaconti led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs and Lyell on second, Hinz stretched the lead to 12-5 with an RBI double to center that scored Lyell. Moments later, Chandler followed up a RBI double down the left field line that scored Hinz that pushed the lead to 13-5. 

In the top of the fifth, Schotz got the inning started with a lead off double down the left field line and later advanced to third. With two runners on base, Bovaconti drove in Schotz that pushed the lead to 14-5. Following a single by Lyell and a walk drawn by Dickens that loaded the bases, Hinz laced a two-run single to right that scored Hale and Lyell as a throwing error by Eureka allowed Dickens to score that increased the lead to 17-5. With two outs and Hinz on second, Chandler ripped an RBI single to right that scored Hinz that took the 18-5 lead. With that RBI by Chandler, it marked her fourth of the game and a new career-high. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Stichling recorded her third scoreless inning of the game that included a game-ending strikeout. 
 
For the game, Hinz and Chandler recorded three hits and four RBI's each while Hale recorded a career-high three RBI's. Lyell recorded her first career four-hit performance and scored three runs. In the circle, Stichling pitched five complete innings and recorded seven groundouts and three strikeouts.


Game 2: Webster 16, Eureka 1

Webster and Eureka opened the second game of the doubleheader with a scoreless first inning lead by starting pitchers Rodriguez and Isabel Ramirez. In the top of the second, the Gorloks erupted for an eight-run inning that started on back-to-back singles by Hinz and Aven Ragwar-Hayes. With two runners on base, Work gave the Gorloks the early 2-0 advantage with a two-run single to right that scored Hinz and Ragwar-Hayes. WU's Aurora Lomheim continued the inning with a single as Bovaconti followed up with a walk that loaded the bases. Moments later, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 4-0 with back-to-back bases-loaded walks issued by Eureka. 

Following a pitching change by Eureka, Stichling increased the lead to 6-0 with a two-run single that scored Bovaconti and Lyell. Moments later, Dickens scored on a throwing error by Eureka's catcher that made the score 7-0. With two outs and runners on the corners, Stichling scored on a passed ball for an 8-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the second, EC's Bre Dixon led off the inning with a triple to right and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lexi Liptak for their first and only run of the game. 

In the top of the third, Webster answered with a five-run inning that started with a two-run double by Stichling that scored Bovaconti and Dickens for the 10-1 lead. Moments later, Schotz launched a two-run homerun over the left field wall that increased the lead to 12-1. With two outs, Work capped off the scoring for the inning and stretched the lead to 13-1 with an RBI double to center that scored Ragwar-Hayes. That RBI by Work marks her third of the game and a new career-high. 

In the top of the fourth, Lyell led off the inning with a double to left and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following back-to-back walks drawn by pinch-hitter Braidyn Burr and Schotz that loaded the bases, pinch-hitter Prisha Nigam drew a walk that scored Lyell for the 14-1 lead. With one out and the bases juiced, Ragwar-Hayes stretched the lead to 15-1 with an RBI single that scored Burr. Shortly later, Lomheim put the ball in play as Eureka's pitcher made an error that allowed Schotz to score that pushed the score to 16-1. 

In the top of the fifth, Rodriguez recorded two strikeouts and a lineout that ended the game. 
 
For the game, Stichling went 2-for-2 and recorded four RBI's while Work drove in a career-high three RBI's. Schotz went 2-for-4 and drove two in RBI's with a two-run homer. Four other Gorloks recorded at least one RBI in this game. In the circle, Rodriguez pitched five innings, recorded seven strikeouts, and allowed only three hits. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Sunday, May 4 hosting the Owls of Mississippi University for Women starting at 12:00PM for their home finale at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Louis, Missouri.
