Gorloks Extend Win Streak To Six Games With Sweep Over Westminster

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued SLIAC play by hosting Westminster College for a doubleheader on Sunday at GCS Ballpark. The GorloksĀ 
earned their third conference sweep of the season by defeating Westminster College by the final scores of 4-1 and 11-6. With both victories, Webster improves to 19-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play.Ā 

Game One: Webster 4, Westminster 1

Left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt took the mound for his seventh start of the season for game one. In the top of the first, Greifelt recorded two strikeouts that led to a scoreless inning. In the top of the second, Karl Peters made an incredible diving catch at shortstop and then fired the ball to Evan Evola at first for the double-play that ended the top half.Ā 

In the top of the fourth inning, Greifelt struck out the side that increased his strikeout total to six. In the bottom half, Peters got the inning started with a leadoff single to center and immediately stole second. Following a walk drawn by Evola, Cullen McBride laid a sacrifice bunt that advanced both runners 90 feet. With one out, R.J. LaRocco smashed a two-run double to left center that scored Peters and Evola for the 2-0 advantage.Ā 

In the top of the fifth, Greifelt continued his fantastic performance by adding two more strikeouts that led to his fifth scoreless inning. In the bottom portion, Dalton Groves got the Gorloks started by reaching base on an error by WC's second baseman. Moments later, Jacob Charlson launched his first career home run which extended the Gorlok lead to 4-0.Ā 

In the top of the sixth, Greifelt's no-hitter came to a close on a leadoff single by Braden Eye. A few pitches later, Greifelt got the batter to roll into a 6-4-3 double-play. The southpaw got out of the inning with a strikeout that kept the Blue Jays scoreless.

In the top of the seventh, Greifelt recorded two flyouts and a strikeout which ended his outing. In the top of the eighth, McBride took over on the mound and recorded three consecutives flyouts which kept Westminster off the board.Ā 

In the top of the ninth, Webster made a pitching change to Jack Wilson as he allowed a lead off double. Moments later, he recorded back-to-back strikeouts. With two outs, WC's William Crabtree laced a rbi double to left that put the Blue Jays on the board at 4-1. Following the run, Webster called upon Joel Arsenault out of the bullpen. With the tying run in the box for Westminster, Arsenault got his batter to groundout to short which generated the win and his seventh save of the season.Ā 

For the game, Charlson and LaRocco drove in two each with Peters and Ryan Hartz recorded two hits apiece. On the mound, Greifelt pitched seven complete innings and struckout a season-high 10 batters. Wilson capped off the team total of 12 strikeouts with two strikeouts.Ā 

Game Two: Webster 11, Westminster 6


WU's Carter Hunt earned his sixth start of the season and recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. In the top of the second, Hunt struckout the first batter he faced. Moments later, the Blue Jays took the 1-0 advantage on a solo home run by Crabtree. Hunt got off of the inning with consecutive flyouts. In the bottom half, Hartz got the inning started with a walk and immediately stole second. With two outs, Ben Stedman ripped a rbi single to left that scored Hartz which tied the game at one apiece.Ā 

In the top of the third, Hunt recorded a strikeout and two groundouts that led to a scoreless inning. In the top of the fourth, the right-handerĀ generated back-to-back strikeouts that increased his total to five. In the bottom frame, Evola led off the inning with a moonshot solo home run over the right center field wall that put the Gorloks on top at 2-1. Following consecutive walks drawn by LaRocco and Nick Schumacher, both student-athletes advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Hartz. Shortly later, WC's pitcher threw a wild pitch that allowed LaRocco to score that extended the lead to 3-1. With one out and Schumacher on third, Stedman executed the squeeze bunt to perfection that scored Schumacher which increased the lead to 4-1.Ā 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Gorloks answered with a five-run inning that started on a lead off solo home run by Charlson for the 5-1 lead. WU's James Theodore followed up with a double and scored on a single by Peters which made the score 6-1. With one out and Peters on third, LaRocco executed a squeeze bunt that allowed Peters to score that pushed the lead to 7-1. With two outs and LaRocco on third base, WC's pitcher was called for a balk that allowed LaRocco to score that made the score 8-1. Following back-to-back walks drawn by Hartz and Stedman, Nick Wrubluski ripped a two-run single to left that increased the lead to 10-1.Ā 

In the top of the sixth, the Blue Jays added a three-run inning that included two hits which made the score 10-4. In the bottom half, Peter got the inning started with a single and immediately stole second. Following a flyout that advanced Peters to third, WC's pitcher was called for a balk that allowed Peters to score which made the score 11-4.Ā 

In the top of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change to Cade Gebhard. Moments later, Westminster added a single-run on a sacrifice flyout to Hartz in right. In the top of the eighth, Peters turned a double-play that led to a scoreless inning by Gebhard. In the top of the ninth, the Blue Jays added the final run of the game on a solo homer by Keli'i Price which generated the final score.Ā Ā 

For the game, Stedman and Wrubluski drove in two each while Peters led the team with two hits. The trio of Peters, LaRocco, and Hartz all scored twice while four Gorloks recorded a rbi. On the mound, Hunt pitched five innings and recorded six strikeouts. Gebhard pitched three innings and one fanned one batter.

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Tuesday, April 8 with a road trip to Blackburn College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM in Carlinville, Illinois.Ā
