Gorloks 37-Win Season Ends In NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The No. 13 ranked Webster University baseball team continued postseason play at the 2025 NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals with two games on Saturday. The Gorloks opened the day with a 2-9 defeat against No. 22 Belhaven University Blazers. In the elimination game, Webster fell to Milwaukee School of Engineering by the score of 2-4 that ended the 2025 season. Webster concludes the 2025 season with an overall record of 37-9 which was a 13-win improvement from the 2024 campaign. 

Game One: Webster 2, Belhaven 9

Left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt earned his 12th start of the season on the mound as he opened the game with a scoreless inning that included a looking strikeout. In the top of the second, Greifelt recorded his second shutout inning with a strikeout, a flyout, and a popup to Dalton Groves behind the dish. In the bottom half, first-year Ryan Hartz laced a two-out single to center for the first hit of the game and advanced to second on a walk drawn by senior Ben Stedman. The Gorloks first scoring opportunity fell short that kept the game scoreless. 

In the top of the third, Greifelt recorded two quick outs with flyouts to center and right. Moments later, the Blazers added back-to-back singles to center that put a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Greifelt recorded a popup to senior shortstop Karl Peters that stranded the runners. In the bottom frame, sophomore James Theodore laced a two-out single and immediately stole second. Following a walk drawn by senior Evan Evola, fifth-year R.J. LaRocco gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead with an RBI single to left that scored Theodore. 

In the fourth, Greifelt sent down the Blazers in order with a popup and two flyouts for his fourth consecutive shutout inning. In the bottom half, the Gorloks got a runner in scoring position that included consecutive hit-by-pitches drawn by Hartz and Stedman that forced a pitching change. Following the pitching change, Groves advanced Hartz to third on a single to center. With two outs and runners on the corners, Peters increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI double to left that scored Hartz. 

In the top of the fifth, Greifelt recorded the first two outs of the inning with strikeouts. He secured his fifth straight shutout inning with a flyout to Theodore in center. In the sixth, Belhaven's Tristan Pearson led off the inning with a double and eventually came around to score on back-to-back groundouts by Greifelt that made the score 2-1. In the seventh, Greifelt recorded his sixth scoreless inning that included a strikeout, a caught stealing throw down to second by Groves, and a flyout.

In the top of the eighth, the Blazers added a five-run inning that included three bases-loaded walks / hit-by-pitches and fielding error that made the score 2-6. In the top of the ninth, Belhaven added two runs on consecutive hits that generated the final score.   

For the game, Peters and Theodore led the team with two hits apiece while LaRocco and Peters drove in one RBI each. On the mound, Ryan Griefelt pitched seven and one-third innings that included six shutout innings and six strikeouts. Four relievers closed out the remainder of the game. 


Game Two: Webster 2, MSOE 4

In the nightcap decision against MSOE, graduate-student Cullen McBride earned his first start of the season and opened the game with a strikeout that led to a scoreless inning. In the top of the second, McBride had a very quick inning that included two strikeouts and a groundout.  In the bottom half, LaRocco led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on a single to left center by Hartz. Following a stolen base by LaRocco, the Gorloks' scoring opportunity fell short with an inning-ending double-play. 

In the third, McBride sent down the Raiders in order with two plays made by Peters at shortstop and a flyout to right for his third shutout inning. In the top of the fourth, MSOE cracked the scoreless game with three consecutive hits that produced two runs. In the bottom half, the Gorloks loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Theodore, Evola, and LaRocco. With no outs, the Raiders doubled-up the Gorloks with a tag attempt at the plate by Theodore. With two outs and two runners on base, Webster's run-scoring opportunity fell short that kept the game at 0-2. 

In the fifth, McBride recorded another quick inning that included two flyouts and a groundout. In the bottom half, Stedman led off the side with a single to center and advanced to third on a double by Groves. With one out and runners in scoring position, Peters got the Gorloks on the scoreboard with an RBI that scored Stedman. 

In the sixth, McBride delivered another quick inning that included a groundout, strikeout, and a flyout. In the top of the seventh, McBride got in a jam as the Raiders added three hits that produced a run that made the score 1-3. Webster made a pitching change to senior J.T. Miller and he recorded a wild pitch that allowed a MSOE run to score that pushed the score to 1-4. Miller closed out the inning with a pair of strikeouts that kept the game at 1-4.  In the bottom half, Groves got the Gorloks going with a lead off infield single and advanced to second on a single by Peters. With two outs and runners on the corner, Evola cut the deficit in half at 2-4 with an RBI single through the right side that scored Groves. 

In the top of the eighth, Miller sent the lead off hitter down on strikeouts for this third of the game. Following a walk issued by Miller, he  picked off the runner at first that ended the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Groves led off the side with a single up the middle. Moments later, Quinton Johnson entered as the pinch runner and pinch hitter Andrew Zenakis took four straight balls that advanced Johnston to second. The Gorloks sent the go-ahead run at the plate three times but did not get a run across that ended the game.  

 For the game, Groves led the team with three hits while Evola and LaRocco had two each. In addition, Peters and Evola drove in a run each. On the mound, McBride tied his career-high innings total of six and one-thirds that included six strikeouts. Miller closed out the final two and two-thirds innings and recorded four strikeouts.
