WU’s Arsenault Secures NCAA Div. III Saves Lead With 11th Save; Gorloks Secure SLIAC Regular Season Title In Sweep Over Griffins

CLAYTON, Mo. - The No. 14 Webster University baseball team closed out the regular season with a conference series against Fontbonne University on Sunday at Shaw Park. The Gorloks secured their eighth conference sweep of the season with a series sweep over the Griffins by the final scores of 8-0 and 8-2. With the sweep, Webster secured the 2025 SLIAC Baseball regular season title with a 17-1 conference record. In addition, the Gorloks have earned the #1 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming SLIAC Baseball Tournament. 

In game one, senior Joel Arsenault became the current NCAA Division III saves leader with a three-inning scoreless performance for his 11th save of the season. In addition, starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt pitched five innings and fanned five batters that secured his 11th victory of the season. With the victory, Greifelt currently ranks second in Division III with 11 wins.  

Game One: Webster 8, Fontbonne 0
Left-handed starting pitcher Greifelt took the mound for his 10th start of the season as he recorded a scoreless inning with two flyouts and a groundout. In the bottom half, senior Evan Evola gave the Gorloks the 1-0 advantage with a solo homer. In the top of the second, Greifelt recorded a flyout and closed out the inning with back-to-back strikeouts for his second shutout inning. In the bottom frame, first-year Ryan Hartz led off the inning with a single through the left side, stole second, and advanced to third on a throw error from Fontbonne's catcher. With no outs, Ben Stedman increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI infield single that scored Hartz. 

In the top of the third, Greifelt sent down the Griffins in order that included two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Nick Schumacher got the Gorloks started with a two-out single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a hit-by-pitch taken by Hartz, Stedman laced an RBI single up the middle that scored Schumacher for the 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Greifelt worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a inning-ending strikeout that kept the Griffins off the board. In the bottom frame, Karl Peters got the Gorloks going with a leadoff single to right center. Moments later, James Theodore increased the lead to 4-0 with a RBI triple to right that scored Peters. With no outs, Evola followed up with an RBI single to left that scored Theodore and pushed the lead to 5-0. Following a pitching change by Fontbonne, Hartz laced a single through the field side that advanced Evola to scoring position. With two outs and two runners on base, Stedman increased the lead to 6-0 with an RBI single to center that scored Evola. 

In the top of the fifth, Greifelt picked up his fifth strikeout of the game that led to his fifth scoreless inning that ended his outing. In the top of the sixth, Webster called up reliever Cullen McBride as he recorded a scoreless inning with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom frame, Evola got the Gorlok started with a double to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a hit-by-pitch that put LaRocco on base, Schumacher smashed a two-run triple to right that scored Evola and LaRocco that made the score 8-0. 

In the top of the seventh inning, Webster called upon the anchor of the pitching staff in Arsenault as he recorded a scoreless inning with three strikeouts. In the eighth inning, Arsenault stranded a runner with a inning-ending strikeout that kept the Griffins off the scoreboard. In the top of the ninth, Arsenault generated the shutout victory and his 11th save of the season with two strikeouts and a groundout.

For the game, Stedman recorded season-highs of three hits, three RBI's, and three runs. Evola went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI's while Schumacher drove in two with a two-run triple. In addition to Greifelt, McBride pitched one inning and recorded one strikeout. Arsenault closed out the final three innings and recorded six strikeouts that secured the shutout victory.  


Game Two: Webster 8, Fontbonne 2
Right-handed starting pitcher Carter Hunt earned his 10th start of the season and opened the nightcap decision with a scoreless inning that included two flyouts and a groundout. In the bottom of the first, Peters got the Gorloks started with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a flyout by Theodore. With one out, Evola gave the Gorloks the early 1-0 advantage with an RBI double to right that scored Peters. Moments later, LaRocco increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to left that scored Evola. 

In the top of the second, the Griffins responded with a two-run inning with three consecutive hits that tied the game at two apiece. In the bottom of the second, Stedman and Nick Wrubluski got the inning started with back-to-back singles to right. Following a successful double-steal attempt, Jacob Charlson put the Gorloks on top at 3-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored Stedman. With one out, Peters drove in Wrubluski that increased the lead to 4-2. 

In the top of the third, Hunt recorded all three outs of the inning with three strikeouts that secured his second shutout inning of the game. In the bottom half, LaRocco got the inning started with a one-out double to right center. Moments later, LaRocco stole third as Schumacher was awarded first with a walk. With runners on the corners and one away, Hartz increased the lead to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored LaRocco. 

In the middle innings, starting pitchers Hunt and Derek Morganthaler recorded back-to-back scoreless as Hunt added a pair of strikeouts that ended his outing. In the top of the sixth, Webster called upon J.T. Miller out of the bullpen as he worked out of a bases-loaded jam with an ending-inning strikeout that kept the score at 5-2.  

In the top of the seventh, Webster called upon right-hander Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he recorded a scoreless inning with two groudouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Peters led off the inning with a triple to left center and later scored on a RBI single by Evola. With two outs, Hartz stretched the lead to 7-2 with an RBI single through the left side that scored Evola. In the top of the eighth, Rompala-Matthews recorded his second scoreless inning of the game that included a strikeout and 3-6-3 groundout doubleplay. In the bottom frame, Theodore and Evola recorded back-to-back doubles that pushed the lead to 8-2. In the top of the ninth, Webster called upon first-year reliever Jack Wilson out of the bullpen as he closed out the game with two flyouts and a strikeout..

For the game, Evola went 3-for-5 with two RBI's while LaRocco went 4-for-5 with one RBI. Hartz went 1-for-2 with two RBI's while Charlson contributed one RBI. On the mound, Hunt pitched five innings and recorded five strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews pitched two innings while relievers Miller and Wilson pitched one inning each.  

The Gorloks will begin postseason play in the 2025 SLIAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 2:00PM at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
