Gorloks Strike Early, Shut Out Dominican 2-0 in Season Opener

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Webster University men's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a road match at Dominican University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks struck early with two first half goals from Scott Price and Immanuel Nwosu and blanked the Stars in the second half that led to a 2-0 shutout victory.   

In the opening minutes of the match, Webster and Dominican each possessed the ball in the attacking zones but no shots were taken. In the eighth minute, the Gorloks constructed an offensive attack when Danny Nusinovic blasted a shot toward the box that hit the hand of the Stars defender for a penalty kick. The reigning 2024 SLIAC Freshman of the Year and leading goal-scorer from last season in Price stepped up and netted the shot for the 1-0 lead.  

Less than five minutes later, in the 12th minute, Webster displayed great teamwork and advanced the ball back into the attacking half which resulted in a shot on goal by Alberto Duque Gonzalez but the shot was saved by Cody Leyba.

For the next 16 minutes of play, the Gorloks added four shots which was led by Price with three while Elias Ibanez-Silva contributed one. In the 28th minute, Webster put together another offensive attack that resulted in a sliding rebound left post goal from Nwosu that came off the shot from Duque Gonzalez for the 2-0 advantage.

In the 34th minute, the Stars sent the ball into Gorlok territory that resulted in a shot on goal but St. Charles Community College transfer goalkeeper Charlie Leahy recorded his first save in a Gorlok uniform. For the remainder of the first half, Webster did not allow a single shot and kept the 2-0 advantage into halftime.

In the first 15 minutes into the second half, Dominican blasted two shots on goal but Leahy stopped both attempts. In the 63rd minute, Price ripped a shot at the crossbar but it was saved by Leyba. For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks allowed two shots but Leahy eliminated both attempts that generated the shutout victory.

For the match, Price led the attack with six shots that included three on goal while Nwosu and Duque Gonzalez added two each. In net, Leahy recorded six saves on 12 shots faced and his first career shutout in a Gorlok uniform.

The Gorloks will open a three-game homestand on Tuesday, September 2 against Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) starting at 6:00 PM at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri.
