Gorloks Battle to Five Sets but Fall Short Against Willamette

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball closed out tournament play at the Washington University Bear Invite Saturday morning with a match against Willamette University. The Gorloks battled back from an early 0-2 set deficit with back-to-back set victories but dropped the match in the fifth set to the Bearcats.  

The Gorloks opened the match with the service and jumped out to an early 4-2 advantage that started on a service ace by Watson and kills by Delaney Fullenkamp and Megan Zablonski. Moments later, the Beavers responded with a 9-1 run that pushed the deficit to 5-11 as Grace White recorded a kill. The Gorloks chipped back in the set with a 3-1 run and cut the deficit to four at 8-12 that included a kill by Catherine Rennier

Midway through the opening set, Willamette countered back with an 8-2 run that made the score 10-20. Webster added their final points of the set that included a solo block by Fullenkamp and kills by Lauren Brown and Rennier. 

Willamette opened the second set with three consecutive points but the Gorloks answered right back with five straight points that took the 5-3 lead. In the run, Zablonski recorded back-to-back service aces while Fullenkamp and Brown added one kill each. Following a kill by the Bearcats, Webster constructed a 9-2 run that included one kill each from Carley Hersberger, Fullenkamp, Delaney Morio, Brown, and Zablonski. First-year Brynn Peloquin contributed a service ace in the run that helped push the lead to 14-6. 

Immediately following the Webster run, Willamette chipped back with a 9-2 run that cut the lead down to one at 16-15. Moments later, Zablonski countered with a kill and back-to-back service aces that increased the lead to 19-15. Shortly later, the Beaver answered with a 4-1 run that pushed the score to 20-19. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks stretched the lead to 22-19 with kills by Rennier and White. However, Willamette closed out the set with a 6-0 run that took the match.  

The Gorloks and Bearcats opened the third set with back-and-forth play that pushed the set to a tie at six apiece. In that stretch of points, Fullankamp, Brown, and White added each added another kill. The battle continued as both teams traded 3-1 runs that pushed the set to a tie at 10 apiece. Following another 3-1 run by Willamette, Webster responded with a 5-1 run that regained the lead at 15-14 as Rennier and White slammed down a kill each. 

With the set tied at 16, the Gorloks went back on top at 19-16 with a 3-0 run on kills by White and Zablonski. Moments later, Willamette responded with a 5-2 run that tied the set at 21 apiece. At a gridlock at 21, the Gorloks closed out the set with a 4-1 run on kills by Fullenkamp, White, and Kate Moleski which won the set 25-22.   

Webster and Willamette opened the fourth set by trading points as a service ace from Peloquin gave the Gorloks the 5-4 advantage. Moments later, the Bearcats constructed a 7-0 run that made the score 5-11. Immediately following that run, Webster erupted with a 13-2 run that took the 18-13 lead. In the run, Zablonski added two kills while Tyler Ramstack, Peloquin, and White contributed a kill each. Moments later, the Bearcats added three consecutive points before both teams rallied back-and-forth that pushed the score to 22-20. The Gorloks closed out the set with three consecutive kills that included two kills by Ramstack and one by White that took the 25-22 and forced a fifth set.

The Gorloks opened the final set with a 2-1 advantage that included a kill by White and another service ace by Zablonski. However, the Bearcats closed out the set with a 14-2 run which took the match.  

For the match, White led the attack with 11 kills while Fullenkamp contributed nine as Zablonski had eight. In addition, Peloquin set a new collegiate-best in assists with 16 while Morio dished out 14. Zablonski ended the match with a team-high five services while Peloquin added two. 

On the defensive side of the net, three Gorloks finished with double-digit dig marks led by Maddie Bock and Zablonski with 13 apiece while Peloquin collected 11. At the net, White had two blocks while five other Gorloks secured one block each. 

The Gorloks will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 3rd with a match against the Eutectics of University of Health Science and Pharmacy starting at 7:00PM in Grant Gym.
