Cappozzo Nets Game-Winning Goal; Gorloks Earn Fourth Consecutive Shutout With 1-0 Victory Over Aurora

AURORA, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened a three-game roadstand with a visit to Aurora University on Sunday. WU's Riley Cappozzo netted the game-winning goal that led to a 1-0 victory over the Spartans. With the victory, it marks the fourth consecutive shutout of the season and improves to 4-1 overall on the season. 

In the opening minutes of the match, Webster and Aurora traded scoring opportunities as both starting goalkeepers Leia Adkins and Leila Conner each recorded their first saves of the match. Following a save by Adkins, the Gorloks constructed an offensive attack when Malaya Blakely found Riley Cappozzo in the box as Cappozzo found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. That goal by Cappozzo marks her first of the season as Blakely was credited with the assist. 

Shortly later, in the 11th minute, the Gorloks orchestrated another fantastic offensive attack that resulted in two scoring opportunities. The first scoring chance of the minute was when Blakely blasted a shot off the crossbar and the follow up shot by Jasmine Hubbard was saved. 

Over the span of the next eight minutes of play, Webster kept the offensive pressure on and recorded three shots on goal. In the 16th minute, Sofia Bosnos ripped a shot on net but it was saved by Conner. One minute later, Blakely had another scoring chance but her shot was saved. In the 19th minute, Blakely blasted a shot on net that hit the crossbar but no follow up shot was present. 

Midway through the first half, the Spartans countered with two offensive scoring opportunities but resulted in a save by Adkins and as the other shot hit the right post that kept Aurora scoreless. For the remainder of the half, Webster added four shots on goal by Payton Montana, Elin Nilsson, Blakely, and Cappozzo as all attempts were saved by Conner.

The Gorloks came out in the second half with the same offensive aggressiveness and added two scoring opportunities. In the 48th minute, Montana and Blakely had great chances for the insurance goal but was stopped by Connor. Just over seven minutes later, Webster added another offensive attack when Blakely blasted a shot toward the net but that attempt went out left. 

For the next 16 minutes of action, Webster and Aurora battled back-and-forth as either team did not record a shot. In the 71st minute, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity when Mia Smith put a shot on goal but it was saved by Connor. In the final 10 minutes of play, Webster added three shots on goal that included attempts by Cappozzo, Mayrin Soto, and Smith but all shots were saved that generated the final score.  

For the match, Webster outshot Aurora 18-7 that included a 14-2 shots on goal differential. Blakely led the attack with six shots while Cappozzo had three shots. In net, Adkins recorded two saves and her first shutout of the season. 

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Wednesday, September 17 with a match against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology starting at 6:00PM (ET) in Terre Haute, Indiana.
