Men’s Soccer Stunned By Bluejays On Sunday

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team closed out a three-game non-conference homestand with a match against Elmhurst University on Sunday at World Wide Technology Park. The Gorloks battled the Bluejays fiercely but fell just short by the final score of 0-1.

In the first 15 minutes of play, Webster and Elmhurst fought back-and-forth as both teams recorded at least two corner kicks each. In the 13th minute, Charlie Noakes had a great scoring opportunity for the Gorloks but his shot went out right. Five minutes later, the Bluejays countered with an attack that resulted in a header goal from a cross. Shortly later, the Gorloks added an offensive attack when Enzo Goncalves Proni had a great chance to tie that game with a shot on goal but it was saved by EU's Niyen Ruffin.

In the 30th minute, Webster pressured the attacking zone when Scott Price ripped a shot that went just wide top left. Five minutes later, the Gorloks had another scoring chance when Elmin Lemes took a shot but it was blocked for a corner kick. In the final five minutes of the first half, Webster added two corner kicks but could not find a shot on either attempt that kept the deficit at 1-0 at halftime.

Midway through the second half, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity off the foot of Noakes as it was saved by Jakub Wiktorczyk. In the 70th minute, first-year Niklas Storck ripped a  shot but it went out wide left.

In the final 15 minutes of regulation, the Gorloks late offensive push with two scoring opportunities from Price and Marcos Gonzales-Collado fell just short as the match went final.

For the match, Price and Noakes led the team with two shots each while Noakes, Gonzales-Collado, and Goncalves Proni had the three shots on goals. In net, goalkeepers Charlie Leahy and Jakub Semelko split time and combined for three saves.

The Gorloks will continue their non-conference schedule on Saturday, September 13 with a visit to Illinois College starting at 6:00PM in Jacksonville, Illinois.
