ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Webster University men's soccer team continued its strong start to SLIAC play Thursday evening, earning a convincing 3-0 victory over Lyon College at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park.
The Gorloks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Scott Price opened the scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from Immanuel Nwosu. Webster doubled its advantage in the 11th minute when Elmin Lemes found the back of the net, assisted by Vladimir Sennikov, giving the Gorloks a 2-0 lead.
The physicality of the match increased midway through the opening half, with both teams being reduced to 10 players within a span of 11 seconds. Webster's Blake Cain received a red card in the 20th minute, followed shortly after by a red card to Lyon's Mateus Moreira Folegatti de Rezende.
Despite playing the remainder of the match 10-on-10, Webster continued to control the contest.
Lemes added his second goal of the night in the 59th minute, scoring off an assist from Juan Ignacio Martins Ferreira to extend the Gorloks' lead to 3-0. Lemes now has three goals on the season.
Webster's defense took care of the rest, as goalkeeper Jakub Samelko recorded three saves to earn the shutout. The Gorloks finished the night with a 21-5 advantage in shots and put eight shots on goal compared to three for Lyon.
With the victory, Webster improves to 2-1-4 overall and 2-0-0 in SLIAC play. The Gorloks have now opened conference play with back-to-back victories.
Webster will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3:30 p.m., hosting Spalding University at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park in another SLIAC matchup.
