Gorloks Softball Drop Home Series To Wartburg

EUREKA, Mo. - The Webster University softball team played in front of their home crowd for the first time this season by hosting Wartburg College. The Gorloks battled the Knights but fell in both games by the score of 3-12 and 9-14. 

Game 1: Webster 3, Wartburg 12
First-year pitcher Addison Penn made her first collegiate start in the circle and recorded a quick inning with two groundouts and a popout. In the bottom of the first, Webster got their first base runner on the paths when Lili Work reached on error but was left stranded.  

In the top of the second, the Knights took the 1-0 advantage on a solo homerun. Penn got out of the inning with consecutive strikeouts that kept the one-run deficit. In the third, Wartburg scored two runs with a groundout RBI and a sacrifice flyout that made the score 0-3. 

In the top of the fourth, Penn recorded two quick outs with a groundout and popout. Moments later, the Knights added a walk, single, and then an error by Webster made the score 0-4. Two batters later, Wartburg added two runs on an infield single then scored another runner on an error. The Knights capped off the five-run inning with a double that made the score 0-8. Following that run, Webster made a pitching change and entered in Adriana Rodriguez as she got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the top of the fifth, Rodriguez sent down the Knights in order where she recorded all three plays; a strikeout and two popouts to herself near the circle. In the bottom half, Vanessa Saenz led off with a walk and Kelsey Sommers entered as a pinch runner. Sommers then advanced to second off the bat of Abigail Chandler. After Sommers stole third, Olivia Hartupee reached on an error that scored Sommers and later stole third. With one out, Paige Vogelgesang laced a single to right that scored Hartupee that made the score 2-8. Following a single by Brie Hale that moved Vogelgesang to third. With two outs, Natalie Puentes reached base on an error that allowed Vogelgesang to score that pushed the score to 3-8 as Hale got out at second that ended the inning. 

In the top of the sixth, Rodriguez had a scoreless inning and recorded all three outs by herself against that included a groundout and two strikeouts looking. In the bottom half, Seanz laced a two-out single to right but was left stranded. 

In the seventh, the Knights added four runs on three hits that pushed the score to 3-12 which eventually generated the final score. In the bottom half, Vogelsang ripped a double to left but two groundouts ended the game.

For the game, Vogelgesang went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored while Hale recorded a hit. In addition, Hartupee recorded an RBI, scored, and stole a base while Puentes recorded an RBI.

In the circle, Penn delivered three and two-thirds innings, recorded three strikeouts, and allowed three runs. Rodriguez closed out the game, recorded five strikeouts, and allowed only three hits. 

Game 2: Webster 9, Wartburg 14
Madi Stichling got the start in the circle for game two as she got into an early jam with a single and two stolen bases. With one out and a runner on third, the Knights struck first with a squeeze bunt for the 1-0 lead as the bunter moved to second on the play. Moments later, Wartburg stole third and added another run on a single to third that made the score 0-2. 

In the top of the second, Stichling recorded two quick outs then the Knights loaded the bases on three consecutive hits. However, Stichling worked out of the bases loaded jam with a flyout for a scoreless inning.   

In the bottom of the second, Ainsley Hinz led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Rodriguez. Moments later, Sophie Errante laced a single up the middle that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Kailey Rushman ripped a single to center that scored Hinz for the 1-2 score. With no outs and bases still loaded, Aurora Lomheim singled to left and scored Rodriguez which tied the game at two apiece. Moments later, Sommers put the Gorloks on top at 4-2 with a two-run double to left that scored Errante and Rushman. Following that play, Wartburg went back to their starting pitcher as she got out of the inning with three consecutive outs.  

In the top of the third, Wartburg got a lead off double and then tied the game at four apiece with a two-run homerun. Following a single, Stichling recorded three consecutive outs that included two flyouts. In the fourth, both teams were left scoreless and both pitchers faced no more than four batters as Rushman had a lead off double for Webster.

In the top of the fifth, the Knights added three runs on three hits that included an error by Webster that made the score 4-7. Brystol Klossner recorded the final out of the inning in the circle as she got a groundout fielder's choice at second. 

In the top of the sixth, Wartburg added a single-run on a double and two wild pitches by Klossner that made the score 4-8. Shortly later, Klossner worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout fielder's choice at second.  

In the bottom of the sixth, Errante led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Rushman. Moments later, Lomheim recorded an infield single that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Errante scored on a wild pitch that made the score 5-8 as all other runners advanced one base. With runners on second and third, Sommers reached bases that re-loaded the bases. With one out, Emma Lanz tied the game eight apiece with a bases-clearing double to right that scored Lomheim, Sommers, and Isabelle Loiben. With two outs, Hinz capped off the five-run inning and put the Gorloks on top at 9-8 with an RBI single up the middle that scored Lanz. 

In the top of the seventh, the Knights got their first two batters of the inning on base with two singles and advanced to scoring position with two stolen bases. Moments later, Wartburg recorded a two-run triple that made the score 9-10. Following that play, Rodriguez entered the circle for Klossner. With a runner on third, the Knights added a run on a wild pitch for the 9-11 score. Following a walk and two stolen bases, Rodriguez recorded a strikeout. With one out, Wartburg added a run on a wild pitch issued by Rodriguez. Following that play, the Knights added two runs on two hits and a sacrifice flyout that made the score 9-14. In the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks were left scoreless which ended the game. 

For the game, Rushman went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored while Hinz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored. In addition, Lomheim went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored as Sommers recorded one hit, two RBI's and scored. WU's Errante also had a hit and scored twice.

In the circle, Stichling delivered four and two-third innings and recorded 11 flyouts and three groundouts. Klossner pitched one and one-third innings and recorded four groundouts. Rodriguez closed out the final inning and recorded two strikeouts.
