Hale Records Career-High Three Hits; Gorloks Drop Florida Opener 5-4 In 10 Innings To Beacons

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team opened spring break in the Sunshine State with two games against Western Connecticut State University and UMass Boston. WU's Brie Hale recorded a career-high three hits The Gorloks fell to WestConn by the score of 4-5 in 10 innings. Webster moves to 5-9 on the season. 

First-year pitcher Kailey Rushman made her seventh appearance of the season and opened the game with a scoreless inning with two groundouts and a lineout. In the top of the second, she sent down the Wolves in order with a flyout, strikeout, and a groundout. 

In the third, Rushman recorded her third consecutive scoreless inning with a foul out to Ava Reinecke behind the dish and two groundouts. In the bottom half, Brie Hale broke up the no-hitter with a single down the left field line but she was left stranded. 

In the top of the fourth, WestConn recorded a double and a flyout that put a runner on third base. With one out, the Wolves struck first on the scoreboard with an error by Rushman that made the score 0-1. Rushman got out of the inning without allowing any more runs with a pop out to Hale at second. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Sophie Errante led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a single to right by Kacey Ekstrom. However, both runners were left stranded. 

In the top of the fifth, Rushman recorded a strikeout and sacrifice bunt outs for the first two outs of the inning. However, WestConn got a runner on third and generated the 2-1 deficit with an RBI single. Rushman got out of the inning with a 6-5 putout. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Reinecke led off and reached base on an error when Addison Penn entered the game as the pinch runner. Paige Vogelgesang followed up with a single to center that advanced Penn to third. With runners on the corners, Hale got the Gorloks on the board with an RBI single to center that scored Penn. 

In the top of the sixth, Rushman recorded her fifth scoreless inning of the game with a foul out to Reinecke behind the dish and a 1-4-3 doubleplay. In the top of the seventh, Rushman sent down the Wolves in order that included two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Reinecke blasted her first career homer that tied the game at 2-2. 

In the top of the eighth, Webster made a pitching change to Adriana Rodriguez as she recorded an error that put runners on the corners. Moments later, the WestConn took the 3-2 lead on a wild pitch issued by Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez got out the inning with two strikeouts and a groundout. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Isabelle Loiben advanced to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Kacey Ekstrom tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Loiben. 

In the top of the ninth, Rodriguez recorded a scoreless inning with back-to-back strikeouts. In the bottom half, Vanessa Saenz advanced Ainsley Hinz to third. Moments later, the Gorloks loaded the bases with two intentional walks but did not score that forced another inning. 

In the top of the 10th inning, the Wolves took the 4-3 lead on an error by Rodriguez. With two outs and a runner on third, WestConn increased the deficit to 5-3 on a wild pitch issued by Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez got out of the inning with back-to-back groundouts. 

In the bottom of the 10th, Errante reached first on an error that advanced Loiben to third. With runners on the corners, Ekstrom drove in Loiben that made the score 4-5 which ended up being the final run of the game for Webster.

For the game, Hale recorded a team-high and career-high three hits while Ekstrom drove in a team-high two RBI's. Errante, Reinecke, and Ekstrom had one hit each. 

In the circle, Rushman pitched seven innings and recorded three strikeouts. Rodriguez closed out the final two innings and recorded five strikeouts.
