Gorloks Explode For 17 Runs In Wins At Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University baseball team continued conference play with a series at Westminster College. The Gorloks earned two victories against the Blue Jays by the final scores of 10-5 and 7-2. With the victories, Webster improves to 6-0 in SLIAC play. 

Game 1: Webster 10, Westminster 5

The Gorloks opened the series with a lead off infield single by James Theodore and then he stole second. Moments later, the Gorloks loaded the bases with back-to-back walks drawn by Adam Moser and Dalton Groves. With no outs, Ryan Hartz drove in Theodore that gave Webster the 1-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Nick Wrubluski stretched the Gorloks lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Moser.  

In the bottom of the first, left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt earned his seventh start of the season and recorded a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and a flyout. 

In the bottom of the second, MUW tied the game at two apiece with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly. 

In the top of the third, Moser singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a flyout by Groves but Moser was left stranded. In the bottom half, Greifelt recorded his second scoreless inning of the game with a groundout, flyout, and a strikeout. 

In the top of the fourth, Wrubluski led off with a single to right then advanced to third on an error by the Blue Jays as Talan Hutchings reached first on the play. With runners on the corners, the Gorloks did not scratch a run that kept the game tied at 2-2. In the bottom frame, Greifelt kept the game tied as he got two flyouts and a groundout. 

In the top of the fifth, Moser recorded a one-out double to right and advanced to third on a sacrifice flyout by Groves. With two outs, Moser gave the Gorloks the 3-2 lead as he scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom half, Greifelt had a quick inning that included two flyouts as Groves picked off a Blue Jays runner that ended the inning. 

In the top of the sixth, Wrubluski led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a single by Ethan Wielt. Following a fielder's choice out by the Blue Jays, Hutchings ripped a two-run double to left center that gave the Gorloks the 5-2 lead. In the bottom half, Greifelt recorded another scoreless inning that included a doubleplay and a flyout to right. 

In the top of the seventh, Moser led off with a single to center and immediately stole second and third. With one out, Hartz laced an RBI single to center and advanced to second that scored Moser and pushed the lead to 6-2.  Following a wild pitch that advanced Hartz to third, Wielt increased the lead to 7-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored Hartz. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change and entered in reliever Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he recorded a scoreless inning with three groundouts. 

In the top of the eighth, Hutchings led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Braedan Trissell. With no outs, Theodore singled to the catcher that allowed Hutchings to score that made the score 8-2. With one out and runners in scoring position, Trissell stretched the lead to 9-2 as he scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Hartz reached on an error that allowed Groves to score that made the score 10-2. 

In the bottom half, Webster called upon reliever Kendall Horton as he allowed an RBI double and delivered a wild pitch that made the score 10-4. With one out, the Blue Jays added another run on an RBI single to left pushed the score to 10-5. Following that run, Webster made a pitching change to Zach Mevert as he got out of the inning with a groundout back to himself at the mound that kept the score at 10-5. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Westminster recorded back-to-back singles that promoted a Gorlok pitching change to Wes Carter. Carter shut the door with a flyout doubleplay Moser in right field then recorded a groundout that ended the game. 

For the game, Moser went 3-for-4 with three runs while Hartz recorded three RBI's. In addition, Wrubluski went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Hutchings went 1-for-4 with two RBI's. On the mound, Greifelt pitched six innings and recorded five strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews pitched one inning and recorded two groundouts. Horton and Mevert got through the eighth inning while Carter recorded a strikeout in the ninth.

Game 2: Webster 7, Westminster 2

In the first inning, Carter Hunt recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout and two flyouts. In the second inning, Hunt faced four batters and recorded a scoreless inning with two flyouts and an assisted out by Hartz in left. In the bottom of the third, Hunt got a groundout back to himself then worked out of two walks with a fielder's choice and a flyout that kept the game scoreless. In the bottom of the fourth, Hunt had a quick inning that included a 5-6-3 doubleplay and a strikeout. 

In the top of the fifth, Trissell gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead with a lead off homer to right. With two outs, Groves laced a double to center then came around to score on an RBI single by Wrubluski that made the score 2-0. Moments later, Hartz ripped a single to left when Wrubluski came all the way around from first to score that made the score 3-0. In the bottom half, Hunt recorded another scoreless inning that included a caught stealing throw down to second by Wrubluski, a strikeout, and a lineout. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays recorded three hits that produced a run that made the score 3-1. Hunt got out of the inning with a groundout.

In the top of the sixth, Moser and Groves drew walks when Wrubluski followed up with a three-run homer that pushed the lead to 6-1. In the bottom half, Hunt allowed a single and recorded a strikeout that ended his outing. Webster then called upon reliever Rompala-Matthews as he allowed a walk and a hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases. With two outs, the Blue Jays added a run on a Webster error that pushed the score to 6-2. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Rompala-Matthews recorded a scoreless inning with a strikeout and two flyouts. 

In the top of the ninth, Theodore led off with a single through the right side, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. With two outs, Wrubluski laced an RBI single to center that scored Theodore and pushed the lead to 7-2. In the bottom half, Rompala-Matthews sent down the Blue Jays in order that included three groundouts.  
 
For the game, Wrubluski went 3-for-4 and recorded a season-high five RBI's that included a three-run homer. Groves went 2-for-4 with two runs. On the mound, Hunt pitched 6.1 innings and recorded five strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews closed out the final 2.2 innings and struckout two batters.
